The Virtue of Selfishness(利己主義という気概)を読む(1)
新年明けましておめでとうございます。
今年も気のむくままに英文の解説的な記事を投稿していきます。あくまで学習メモ的なものなので拙いところがありますが、よろしくお願いします。
今回はアイン・ランドの"The Virtue of Selfishness"のIntroductionの冒頭の一部を解釈していきます。「利己主義」という一般的にマイナスの意味を用いられる言葉をプラスの意味で用いられることで、修正資本主義や大きな政府を批判し、新自由主義に通ずる思想を表明しているのが本書です。
いわゆる強者の論理からの思想の展開のため、問題含みであり、私自身もその思想に全面的には共感を覚えませんが、現代の家父長的な政府によっておこる腐敗という問題に一石を投じる内容だとは思います。
The title of this book may evoke the kind of question that I hear once in a while: “Why do you use the word ‘selfishness’ to denote virtuous qualities of character, when that word antagonizes so many people to whom it does not mean the things you mean?”
To those who ask it, my answer is: “For the reason that makes you afraid of it.”
But there are others, who would not ask that question, sensing the moral cowardice it implies, yet who are unable to formulate my actual reason or to identify the profound moral issue involved.
