Betrayal in Our Business Promise
A diligent 38-year-old Japanese woman was invited by her former boss to join a small IT company.
She had previously worked at major Japanese corporations, global enterprises, Japanese startups, and mid-sized publicly listed companies. She wanted this to be her final career move. After all, she had a young child and needed a stable lifestyle.
The offer seemed attractive:
Several former colleagues had already joined the company, providing familiar faces.
A salary increase.
Remote work was allowed.
A chance to transition into pre-sales, a role she had always wanted to try. (Although she had been an engineer, she had written proposals before, and her positive mindset was deemed suitable for sales.)
She would be a one-person department, effectively acting as a manager.
The salary increase was tempting, but work-life balance was her priority. Raising a two-year-old while working meant that remote work was the most critical condition for her.
"The working hours are long, but oh well."
With that lighthearted thought, she accepted the offer.
Upon joining, she met a stunningly beautiful and friendly Chinese woman from the administration department. She was 32, single, and dating a Japanese man who was currently stationed overseas.
Her aura wasn’t that of an ordinary office worker. She exuded an air of wealth, resembling a high-class hostess. She had a slender figure, wore heavy makeup, and always dressed stylishly. Her wardrobe seemed endless.
Shortly after joining, the project manager she was supposed to work with resigned, and she was forced to take over as PM.
"Wait, wasn’t I supposed to do pre-sales?"
But she tolerated it, thinking it was only for a few months.
Then, she was assigned to another project. One year passed, and she never got the chance to do pre-sales as initially promised.
And then, the Chinese woman from administration was suddenly appointed as the pre-sales representative.
How? She had only ever worked in administration.
She, on the other hand, had 12 years of experience as an engineer and had been actively involved in proposal drafting. Yet, an inexperienced beauty was given the role instead.
The company’s CEO was also Chinese.
Rumors swirled that the Chinese woman had private meetings with the CEO, dined with him, and even had her golf lessons paid for by him.
It was clear—she had taken my role.
And yet, because she lacked the necessary skills, I was the one secretly writing the proposals.
This woman was calculating, manipulative, and ruthless.
Before the new structure was announced, she had been overly friendly, always chatting with her. But the moment she got the role, she stopped speaking to her altogether.
Later, she discovered that the Chinese woman had been badmouthing her to the CEO, complaining about her grievances toward the company. She even argued that she was more suitable for the pre-sales role than her.
She worked until 10 PM every night.
For three months, she couldn’t have dinner with her child on weekdays.
She even worked on weekends.
And yet, this was the reward she received?
She appealed to the boss who had recruited her, but he was powerless against the CEO.
"I’ll think about it at the right time," he said, but nothing happened.
She made up her mind to leave.
And this time, she vowed to build her own success—on her own terms.
