今日知った英単語・表現#1

内容はタイトルの通りです。
1) 注意書き
・例文に関しては、私が作成したものであり、誰の校閲も受けておりませんので、間違いがあればご指摘のほどお願いします。

2) 単語・表現
★fall to bits=機能しなくなる
e.g.) The organization fell to bits after the president changed.
(社長の変更後、その組織は機能しなくなった)
*<fall to pieces>とも表現する
★up to O/doing=O/〜することができて、耐えられて
e.g.) I'm not up to eating so many meals.
(そんなに多く食べられません)
*通例否定文
★agnostic=不可知論者
e.g.) The teacher talked about one of the differences between agnostics and atheists.
(先生は不可知論者と無神論者の違いの一つを話した)
<maning of agnostics>
a person who believes that it is not possible to know whether God exists or not (from OLD)
★abiding=いつまでも変わらない
e.g.) They have an abiding passion for dancing.
(彼/彼女らは踊りに対して変わらない情熱がある)
★abstruse=難解な
e.g.) So abstruse was the question that no one could answer.
(その問題はとても難しく誰も解けなかった)
★dos and don'ts=すべきこととしてはいけないこと
e.g.) Dos and don'ts are variable; I mean, ultimately they are up to the situation.
(すべきこととしてはいけないことは可変的である。最終的にはその状況次第である)
★pooh-pooh O=Oを軽くあしらう
e.g.) My boss pooh-poohed my idea that took a year to conceive.
(一年かけて構想した考えを上司は軽くあしらった)
★drudgery=つまらぬ仕事
e.g.) I would rather die than do such a drudgery.
(そのようなつまらぬ仕事をするくらいなら死んだ方がマシである)
★crop up=(思いがけなく)生じる
e.g.) The idea cropped up and we set about preparing it.
(その考えは突如思い浮かび、我々は実行準備に取り掛かった)
