降着装置は着陸する際の負荷を吸収し、地上で飛行機を支えます。小型飛行機は３つの車輪を有しています。２つの主車輪は胴体の両サイドに位置していて、3つ目の車輪は機首部分(首輪式)か尾翼部分(尾輪式)に付いています。

The landing gear absorbs the load when landing and supports the plane on the ground. Small airplanes have three wheels. The two main wheels are located on either side of the fuselage, and the third wheel is located in the nose (nose wheel type) or tail (tail wheel type).

首輪式の降着装置はトライサイクル・ギアとも呼ばれ、現代の汎用型機では一般的となっています。首輪はラダーを動かすことで制御可能です。

尾輪式は従来型の降着装置で、プロペラと地面との間がより広くなっているため、柔らかで舗装されていない飛行場に適しています。他方、尾輪式の飛行機は、前方の視界が悪いので滑走が難しく、この手の機体を運用するエアマンは経験豊富な教官から運用許可が求められます。

The tail wheel type is a conventional landing gear, which is more suitable for soft, unpaved airfields due to the greater distance between the propeller and the ground. On the other hand, tail wheel airplanes have poor visibility ahead, making it difficult to taxi, so airmen who operate these types of aircraft require endorsement from experienced instructors.

衝撃吸収システムには主に2つのタイプが利用されています。オレオ式ストラットでは内部にピストン、空気と油が入ったシリンダーからなり、急速に圧を吸収し、それを徐々に放出します。鋼製バネ式では、その名が示すように、鋼鉄製のバネに圧がかかった時、それをバネで吸収します。
