洋画を使ったコーパス分析

１．調査目的

確立を表す副詞probably, perhaps, maybeに関する「使用頻度」「場面状況」「前後関係」の分析。セリフ毎に各単語の用法を探る。

・一般的な概念…各々の語源、辞書での定義
probablyはprove＋able「証明されうる」ことから「多分」という意味になった。
perhapsはby happeningつまり「あてずっぽうで」が語源になった。

・一般的な確率の捉え方
英語を母語とする外国人30人程にアンケートをとった。口を揃えての回答はperhapsは上品、御洒落、丁寧といったものだった。確率に関してはprobably>perhaps>maybeという人もいれば、probably>maybe>perhapsという人もいた。probablyは高い確立の場面で使われることがあるということが分かった。辞書の定義にはこのようなことが書かれている。

（maybeは話し手の意識としては起る確率は5割程度）
同種類の副詞を話し手の確信度によっておおまかに分類すると以下のようになる。
50%ないしそれ以下：possibly, conceivably, perhaps, maybe
50%以上90%ぐらいまで：likely, presumably, doubtless, probably
90%以上：inevitably, necessarily, definitely, unquestionably, certainly, undoubtedly

２．使用したシナリオ/検索方法

・使用したシナリオはSteven Allan Spielberg監督の代表作品以下の10作品使用した。

検索方法はword listで頻度数を検索。concordanceで使用場面の把握を行うため文章を摘出。clusterで前後関係を見るためその単語の右に来る単語上位5単語を摘出。probably, maybe, perhapsが使用されている状況分析。推測の中に隠れている表現を探す。

・強調構文の副詞として使われる。
・前後に断定的、強調的な文章が来ることが多い。

・遠回しに否定を表すときに使われる。Maybe we should stop it.
・消極的な内容、勧誘が多い。
・右に主語が来る場合が圧倒的に多い

発見
・perhapsは単独、又は文頭で使われることが多い。
・会話の返答で使われる。
・語法はmaybeと似ている。
・右にくる単語は多種多様。

３．分析手法：量的/質的観点

検索方法はword listで頻度数を検索し、それぞれの単語をconcordanceで使用場面の把握を行うため文章を摘出した。各文章の前後関係を読み取り、その単語がどのように活用されているか、又、肯定的（断定的）か否定的かを主観的に判断した。clusterで前後関係を見るためその単語の右に来る単語上位5単語を摘出した。全ての単語が比較的高い割合で文頭で使われることが共通点として見つかった。

・結果（調査ポイント）
①これらの副詞は概して文頭で使われることが多い。
②口語表現ではmaybeが圧倒的に多く使われる。
③perhapsは文語表現ということは必ずしも本当ではない。
④perhapsは返答にも使われる。
⑤probablyの前後には断定的な会話が多い。
⑥maybeは曖昧な表現や助動詞、仮定法の表現が多い。(orやwill, should)
⑦probablyは主語または動詞の後の強調の様な形で使われることが多い。
⑧perhapsは単独、又は文頭で使われることが多い。
⑨perhapsとmaybeの確信度に関する断定的な違いはない。
⑩perhapsとmaybeを同じ文章内で使用することで冗語的な意味を表す。

時代的、歴史的にも言語は影響を受けるものなので、今回の映画シナリオは作者の背景が映画のセリフとして反映されているかもしれないことが懸念される点、そしてそれぞれの映画は数十年に渡って撮影されてきているので、一貫した規則があるとは言い切れない。それを考慮すると時代の流れと共にこれらの単語の語法は変わってきているかもしれない。
