Kobe Sketch 3 (Kobe's attractive spot)
Today, I’d like to talk about another attractive spot in the city of Kobe.
After visiting Nankin-machi, I dropped in one of the famous roads named ’Tor Road’ on the way back to JR Sannomiya station. ’Tor Road’ is a 1.2 km slope road from the South area including old foreign settlement next to Daimaru Department Store to the North area including Kitano-ijinkan, former foreign residence.
In the end of the Tor Road for the North, you'll find Kobe Club, which was formerly luxury ’Tor Hotel (1908-1950)’, which was jointly financed by four countries such as Britain, Germany, US, and France.
Since Tor Hotel has opened in 1908, some people say that the road has come to call as 'Tor Road'. Moreover, another people say it is from the word 'Tor', which means 'hill' by the Celtic origin.
Kobe Port was opened in the year 1868. European and US culture such as from flour, coffee, butter, cheese to golf, movie, jazz and fashion has imported here. The Tor Road area has developed widely and become an exotic as well as cool shopping road since then.
You can feel and enjoy international atmosphere because of having a lot of different kinds of shops and restaurants such as bakeries, sweets shops, hats shops, shoes shops, which are owned by foreigners and Japanese when visiting here.
I will recommend you to visit this cosmopolitanized slope and to walk slowly form South to North with feeling Kobe wind.
Thank you for joining me as always!
See you next time.
