Act 3: The Future of Idea Generation

We need ideas to save the world, humanity, and all life. Even within the framework of the SDGs, ideas are crucial. Today, I would like to talk about “The Future of Idea Generation.” Let’s first review how ideas are generated.
Act 1: How Are Ideas Born?
Example 1: The Idea of a “Magic Key with Overwhelming Destructive Power” When I was a first-year high school student, I discovered a “key” for unlocking cylinder locks. I was in the dimly lit bike parking area under the gym, and it was too dark to see the combination on the dial lock.

At that moment, I came up with a method of shifting the last digit of the four-digit number to lock it. One day, I wondered if others were doing the same thing, so I asked my friends, and it turned out they were doing something similar. This led to the idea, “Not all locks are like this, but there are locks that can be opened without keys.” Through this discovery, I realized the vulnerability of combination locks. Since then, I have used this knowledge to strengthen the settings of my own locks and advised my friends and family to raise their security awareness. Next, I thought about how to give impressive advice on this idea. That’s when I came up with the idea of creating words that would convey the idea in a compelling way. Words have power. They stay in people’s minds and become a kind of “spirit.”

For example, in Spirited Away, when Chihiro declares, “Please let me work,” Yubaba is bound by the power of words and can no longer ignore her. By adding the phrase “magic key with overwhelming destructive power,” I gave the idea a mystical impression, conveying both danger and a sense of great power.
Note: Idea + Words = New, Mystical Ideas Can Be Born Example

Example 2: From the QR Code on a Utility Pole to Castle Costumes
On my way home, I noticed a clinic’s QR code posted high on a utility pole along a narrow, busy road.

As I walked, I thought: “Who would stop and scan a QR code in a place like this?” →
“If I were to see a QR code, maybe it would be in front of a castle?”→
“If there were a QR code in front of a castle, what kind of information would I want to know?”→
“Detailed, somewhat nerdy blueprints of the castle might be interesting.”→
“But even if I got the blueprints, it wouldn’t be that fun. Only enthusiasts would enjoy it, and they probably already have that information.”→
“Then, how about an app where you can see yourself in historical costumes through the camera, like those face-in-the-hole panels you see at tourist spots? ”→
“You could dress up anywhere in the castle, and it would be fun if there were more variations of costumes or samurai topknots.”

“The city’s tourism department might create something like that. It would be a lot of work to do it myself.”
Such thoughts kept coming to me as I walked.
Note: I call this thought process “Runaway Association.”

Example 3: The Idea of a Car Sleeping Berth
Shortly after I got married, we used to travel with the family almost every holiday. We often slept in the car, but when my daughter became an elementary school student, I decided that I wanted a bunk bed.. I found out that a dedicated setup would cost around $3500, so I pondered for a while.
One day, after three months of thinking, I had a flash of inspiration

:
“If I put a stretcher on the backrests of the front and rear seats, I can make a simple bunk bed!”

I bought a used folding stretcher for $150 at an auction site and actually built it.
Note: When you think about a problem for a long time, sometimes an idea suddenly strikes you, and that becomes an idea.

Example 4: Apps that support my favorites
About 10 years ago, I saw a fan of a rock band say something interesting online: “I like to support bands before they become famous and then watch them gradually become famous.”
This reminded me of stock investments. And then my “Runaway Association” began again.
“Supporting your favorite celebrity is like investing in stocks, right?” →
“What if we treated celebrities like companies and made an app similar to stock trading?” →
“Maybe we could use Google search indicators to automatically evaluate their performance.” →
“As they become more famous, the stock price rises.” →
“We could create stock charts and even consider dividends.” →
“What if we offered handshake tickets as shareholder benefits exclusive to Japan?” →
“Could this help actors who, as they get older and lose work, die alone without support?” →
“Maybe we could use that investment fund to support them?” →
“We could hold shareholder meetings to send messages or hold support rallies.”
I looked it up on Google, and there was already an app that combined AKB48’s activities with stocks, so I gave up on the idea.

Well, government employees are banned from having side jobs anyway, so I couldn’t have done it either way.

Other ideas:

  •   “Event: Samurai 100 Kills Certificate”: An idea inspired by fighter plane kill marks. Ten students take turns attacking the customer, and the customer continues to “slash” them with predetermined movements. When a student is “slashed,” they return to their original position and attack the customer again. After 10 rounds of this for each student, the customer achieves 100 kills and receives a 100-kill certificate.
  •   “The Probability of Getting Caught in 10 Traps in a Row”: An idea for a TV show where a person gets caught in traps repeatedly as soon as they enter a room.
  •   “Pen with Heating and Cooling Functions”: An idea that came to me when I was troubled by sweaty hands.
  •   “Warm Stethoscope for Children”: An idea aimed at improving stethoscopes for young patients.
  •   “Patient Identification Band Covers That Can Display Messages”: An idea where friends and family can write supportive messages on a patient’s identification band.
  •   “A Method for Not Falling the First Time You Ride a Bicycle”, and so on.

In my mid-30s, I thought about various methods for generating many ideas. I considered writing a book about it, thinking it might sell. However, a book titled A Technique for Producing Ideas was already written in 1940.

Moreover, there are plenty of other books on how to generate ideas. I found that the approximately 20 methods I had thought of were all already covered in those books, so I gave up on the idea of writing my own.

Act 2: Why Was I Born?

They say there are two important days in life: the day you are born and the day you realize why you were born. For me, that day of realization came in my mid-40s.

When I was thinking of an idea, I realized
And when I had this realization, I felt a surge of desire to come up with a big idea that could change the world. Deep down, I declared, just like when I was a child:
“I will create an idea for world peace!”

It felt the same as when I had a dream and declared it in my elementary school days. The haze in my chest cleared, and I felt refreshed and light-hearted.

A year ago, I was watching TV, and there was a program about job support for ex-convicts. I thought,
“Reintegration is tough.” And then, as usual, my “Runaway Association” began.
“Is there a way to help?”→
“There’s that strangely popular criminal. An app that supports the favorites I was thinking about didn't help?”→
“Could it help the victims of crime too?”→
“If it's a push-katsu for criminals, could prominent politicians also be part of the push group?”→

In that moment, an idea struck like lightning.

“Isn’t this an idea for world peace?”

“Everyone in the media becomes an investment target, both good and bad.”→
“Communication is the first step in problem-solving, and through shareholder meetings, messages, and support rallies, people could communicate with politicians.”→
“What if we added a feature to send tips directly to the person, along with supportive comments?”→
“With YouTube, you have to register yourself to receive tips, but couldn’t we simplify the process so that people could nominate who they want to tip?”→
“The President of China has a big, dignified presence—he might become popular.”→
“The Ukrainian president is a former actor, so he could be popular too.”→
“What if we added a feature to support victims of war?”→
“If people could communicate directly with politicians, couldn’t that influence the world?”→
“Once a politician logs into the push-katsu app, we could consider them as ‘listed.’”→
“Even if they’re not officially listed, anyone who raises over 100 million yen could be considered a unicorn company.”→
“I’m sure there are people who would support the U.S., Russia, Ukraine, and Palestine.”→
“After all, ideology and religion are part of diversity.”→
“We can create an ethics department to handle fine ethical issues.”→
“We should establish branches in each country and enable the transfer of funds.”→
“If I’m going to start a company, it has to be in the U.S.”→
“Could it be selected by Cathie Wood’s ‘Disruptive Innovation’ companies?”→

“The ticker symbol would have to be ‘IDOL,’ right?” →

Runaway Association + App ideas that support my favorites + The Word “World Peace” = The Idea of a Company That Could Contribute to World Peace

Well, government employees can’t have side jobs, and I have other things to do anyway.

Act 3: The Future of Idea Generation

Some ideas have been realized, while others remain just ideas. Whether the idea of “world peace” will truly save the world is unknown. However, there is a possibility that this idea will combine with other ideas and create new paths to peace.
But that’s not what I want to emphasize today.
The important thing is that the idea for “world peace” was born. Why was it possible? Because I declared, “I will create an idea for world peace.”
To all creators around the world, make your own declarations.
For example, a sushi chef might declare, “I will create an idea to end poverty in the world,” and while thinking up a new sushi menu, that idea might come to them.
An advertising creator working on a new commercial might come up with a solution to marine pollution.
An opera singer might declare, “I will create an idea to end poverty in the world.”
A firefighter might declare, “I will create an idea to end discrimination.”
A middle school student might declare, “I will create an idea to stop wars.”
Even a criminal could declare, “I will create an idea to eliminate crime in society.”
I strongly encourage retirees to think, generate ideas, and spread them.

What I learned from this experience [The Future of Idea Generation]
We declare a good future and continue to consider the words of that declaration as elements of ideas.
There are bound to be many innovations and breakthroughs waiting ahead.
I believe that by connecting ideas and declarations, we will one day come up with ``practicable ideas to save the earth.''
thank you
