"The Eight Traitors" Founded Silicon Valley 64 Years Ago - PART 3
**Reaching the Summit**
After resigning, the "Eight Traitors" founded Fairchild Semiconductor, developing groundbreaking transistor technology and inventing the first silicon transistor, MOS transistor, integrated circuit, and operational amplifier.
They adopted a management style starkly different from Shockley's and all other tech companies, embracing a flat, equal, and trust-based approach. Exhibiting extraordinary business acumen for engineers, they rapidly commercialized all their inventions.
Within just three years, Fairchild became the global leader in electronics technology and sales. In contrast, Shockley, having lost his talented team, became even more stubborn and four years later, resigned in disgrace, ending his entrepreneurial journey.
However, perhaps driven by the thrill of entrepreneurship or a deeply ingrained rebellious spirit, the Eight Traitors did not rest on Fairchild's laurels. Instead, within ten years, they each left to start new ventures, leading to Fairchild's gradual decline.
Yet, this wave of new startups by the Eight (and other tech pioneers who joined Fairchild) transformed Palo Alto into a burgeoning center for the electronics industry, earning it the name "Silicon Valley," after silicon, the most crucial material in electronics.
Statistics show that a total of 92 companies can trace their roots to Fairchild, known as "Fairchildren." It is almost certain that without the Eight Traitors' defection from Shockley Semiconductor and their subsequent display of combined technological, managerial, and commercial genius, today's Silicon Valley, and indeed the entire landscape of the electronics industry, would be vastly different.
