Jefferies analyst Philippe Houchois said Tesla's Q4 "only met a fast rising consensus," but also noted that its free cash flow "beat handsomely" and argues that the company's operating metrics "remain exceptional and a threat to legacy OEMs." However, the report came without an incremental "scare factor" or specific news from Elon Musk's presence on the call and bears will question the lack of new products in 2022, said Houchois, who sees sufficient growth in the Model 3 and Y this year to support estimates and Tesla reaching 2% global share. He maintains a Buy rating on Tesla shares with a $1,400 price target.
Oppenheimer analyst Colin Rusch raised the firm's price target on Tesla to $1,103 from $1,080 and keeps an Outperform rating on the shares following quarterly results. The analyst notes Tesla posted upside to consensus across metrics, while confirming its targeted 50% unit growth in 2022. He is "encouraged" that the company is integrating 4680 cells off its Austin, TX line into battery packs and that qualification of its Austin and Berlin facilities are progressing. Commentary around Full-Self Driving remained upbeat, Rusch adds. The analyst believes Tesla continues to extend its lead versus competition on FSD given road mile data advantages enabling accelerated learning cycles.
Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives notes that on Wednesday, Tesla delivered "stellar" top and bottom-line results which beat expectations across the board with major EV demand tailwinds into 2022. The all-important Automotive gross margins were 30.6% versus the Street's 29.2%, highlighting more efficiency Tesla is seeing with Giga in China front and center despite the chip/supply chain issues, Ives adds. With the chip shortage still a major overhang on the auto space and logistical issues globally, the delivery numbers combined with this "impressive earnings beat" speaks to an EV demand trajectory that looks quite robust for Tesla with clear momentum heading into 2022, the analyst argues. He has an Outperform rating and a price target of $1,400 on the shares.
Baird analyst Ben Kallo raised the firm's price target on Tesla to $1108 from $888 and keeps an Outperform rating on the shares. The analyst noted that despite several headwinds and one-time charges, TSLA beat estimates driven largely by a revenue and gross margin. Kallo said the conference call reinforced the company's focus on scale as it ramps incremental capacity at its five factories and management also highlighted several technology advancements.
Credit Suisse analyst Dan Levy views Tesla Q4 as positive given the EPS beat, with near-term lumpiness outweighed by margin opportunity and supply ramp supporting volume growth. The analyst agrees on prioritizing supply ramp over new product in 2022, though still sees Model 2 as critical. Margin strength continues, long-term opportunity as well, Levy points out. The analyst also points out that Tesla reiterated FSD as priority, with him seeing timing as ambitious, but reaffirms upside for stock defined by non-auto endeavors. Levy has a Neutral rating and a price target of $1,025 on the shares.
Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas said the Q4 bar was set high for Tesla following the company's "blow-out" preliminary delivery numbers and that Tesla "largely met the profit bar and exceeded the cash flow bar." Tesla was "already the most profitable major auto company in the world, but is now emerging as the most cash flow generative auto company in the world (pound for pound)" as production costs may be in position to gap down further based on new plants and new manufacturing techniques, Jonas tells investors in a Q4 recap note. He has an Overweight rating and $1,300 price target on Tesla shares.
BofA analyst John Murphy said despite Tesla's "solid" Q4 performance, he is concerned that the stock may "already be priced to perfection" and that the quarterly report was "perhaps not good enough for great expectations." More noteworthy than the Q4 results themselves was Tesla's outlook for 2022-plus, which was "relatively vague" and "notably lacking," especially around product, said Murphy. He reiterates a Neutral rating with a price target of $1,300 on Tesla shares.
Wells Fargo analyst Colin Langan raised the firm's price target on Tesla to $910 from $860 and keeps an Equal Weight rating on the shares following quarterly results. The analyst notes Tesla Q4 EPS of $2.54 beat consensus of $2.36, driven by auto gross margins. Most notably, CEO Elon Musk expects Level 4 Full-Self Driving to roll out by year-end. Langan remains skeptical of Tesla delivering Level 4 autonomy in this very short timeframe, particularly without LiDAR. The analyst is also cautious on the new product delays.
Citi analyst Itay Michaeli raised the firm's price target on Tesla to $313 from $262 and keeps a Sell rating on the shares. The company reported a "strong Q4 though short of a blowout" with the quarter-over-quarter incremental gross margin easing to 30% from 44% in Q3 and 50% in Q2, Michaeli tells investors in a research note. The analyst says the outlook was "mixed" with positive commentary on 2022 production and operating leverage but a "seemingly less robust" new product launch update.
Tesla shares are flattish following last night's Q4 results, but the stock is 20% lower than it was just a few weeks ago, Piper Sandler analyst Alexander Potter tells investors in a research note. The analyst says Tesla remains his favorite idea, adding the results "did nothing to dent our enthusiasm - but the quarter wasn't completely flawless." Supply chain headwinds are inflating logistics costs while forcing a measured approach to new product introductions, notes Potter. He believes these are providing an entry point into the stock and keeps an Overweight rating on Tesla with a $1,300 price target.
Barclays analyst Brian Johnson keeps an Underweight rating on Tesla with a $325 price target following last night's results. In talking about the product pipeline, Elon Musk pivoted from future vehicles like the Roadster or the less than $25,000 Model 2 to robotaxis and humanoid robots, Johnson tells investors in a research note. While Johnson recognizes that robotaxis are a crucial part of the bulls' "blue sky" valuations for Tesla, he's concerned "about the lack of a physical product pipeline."
JPMorgan analyst Ryan Brinkman raised the firm's price target on Tesla to $325 from $295 and keeps an Underweight rating on the shares. Tesla reported better than expected Q4 results, featuring stronger than consensus revenue, margin, and free cash flow, Brinkman tells investors in a research note. The company, however, said it does not plan to launch any new models in 2022 "despite a bevy of planned new battery electric models from major and start-up automakers," adds the analyst. He notes that this implies the Roadster and Semi, originally slated for launch in 2020, and the Cybertruck, originally slated for launch in 2021, will be delayed until at least 2023.
