Welcome to my podcast if you are new here.
Today, I’m going to talk about learning languages.
As you may have noticed—or as you may have heard—I already talked about languages before, specifically about French.
In that episode, I mainly talked about French.
So today, I’d like to talk about other languages.
I have learned—or I have studied—several languages so far.
And just to be clear, I didn’t say I have mastered or become fluent in those languages, okay?
I just said I have learned or studied them to a certain level.
So far, I’ve studied several languages just following my interests, I’d say.
Let’s see... I’ve learned German, Spanish, Russian, Mandarin Chinese, a little bit of Cantonese, Arabic, and also a bit of Latin.
Actually, I’ve studied several other languages as well, but I didn’t really spend much time on those other ones.
As for German, Spanish, Russian, Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese, Latin, and Arabic, I think I’ve spent a decent amount of time on them.
I’m not sure exactly how much time I spent on each, but it was quite a bit, I think.
I’m not even sure which language I spent the most time on—maybe Spanish, maybe German, or maybe Arabic.
To be honest, I don’t know.
As I mentioned in the French episode, French is my second-best foreign language, next to English, of course.
I’m not sure what comes next—maybe German, Spanish, or Arabic.
I think I’ve spent almost the same amount of time on those three languages.
I might have mentioned this before, but I’m currently learning Arabic.
Let’s see... Oh, it’s been about a year since I restarted learning Arabic seriously.
I said "seriously," but I only spend about 20 to 30 minutes every day.
Sometimes a bit more, but yeah, that’s about it.
So, about a year ago, I restarted learning Arabic.
I think I’ll dedicate another episode to Arabic in the future, but for now, let’s stop there.
German, Spanish, and Arabic would probably be my third-best languages.
I’m not sure which one exactly, though.
Also, I’ve been thinking about restarting German because I’ve always been intrigued by the language.
I learned it before, but I’ve always wanted to come back to it.
To me, German sounds... I’m not sure how to express this, but maybe "sophisticated" or "intelligent"—and even "cool," I think.
That’s why I want to learn German again.
German is very similar to English because, as languages, they are kind of like siblings (brothers or sisters).
English is like a mix of German and French.
In English, some words come from French, and some come from German.
When you see German, some words look very similar to English, but the grammar is very different from English.
It’s a challenge, but at the same time, I think that’s a very interesting point about learning German.
At this moment, I’m not thinking about restarting Spanish, by the way, but maybe someday in the future—I’m not sure.
For now, I’ll stick to Arabic and German for a while.
So, those are the languages I’ve learned so far.
Like I said, for some of them, I spent a decent amount of time, but for others, I didn’t.

今日は「語学」についてお話しします。
以前のエピソードで語学について話したことがありますが、その時は主にフランス語について話しました。
今回は、それ以外の言語についてお話しします。
これまでいくつかの言語を学んできました。
ただ、誤解のないように言っておくと、「マスターした」とか「その言語を流暢に話せるようになった」とは言っていません。
ただ、「ある程度学んだ」というだけです。
これまで興味のままにいくつかの言語を学んできました。
例えば、ドイツ語、スペイン語、ロシア語、北京語、広東語をちょっと、アラビア語、そして少しラテン語を勉強しました。
実はほかにもいくつかの言語を学んだことがありますが、それらにはあまり時間を割いていません。
ドイツ語、スペイン語、ロシア語、北京語、広東語、ラテン語、アラビア語については、それなりに時間をかけたと思います。
正確にどれくらい時間を費やしたかは分かりませんが、結構まとまった時間をかけたと思います。
どの言語に一番時間をかけたかも覚えていませんが、多分スペイン語、ドイツ語、あるいはアラビア語だと思います。
正直なところ、自分でも分かりません。
以前のフランス語のエピソードで話しましたが、フランス語は僕にとって英語の次にできる言語です。
その次に来るのは何かは分かりませんが、多分ドイツ語、スペイン語、またはアラビア語だと思います。
これらの3つの言語には、ほぼ同じくらいの時間をかけました。
以前話したかもしれませんが、現在僕はアラビア語を学んでいます。
真剣に再スタートしたのは、約1年前のことです。
「真剣に」と言いましたが、実際には毎日20～30分ほどしか勉強していません。
たまにそれより長くなることもありますが、それくらいです。
約1年前にアラビア語の学習を再開しました。
アラビア語については、将来別のエピソードで詳しく話そうと思いますが、今日はここまでにしておきます。
ドイツ語、スペイン語、アラビア語は、僕にとって三番目にできる言語と言えるかもしれません。
どれが三番目かは分かりませんが、とにかくこの3つの言語が該当します。
それから、ドイツ語の再学習を始めようかと考えています。
ドイツ語にはずっと興味があり、以前も勉強していたのですが、また戻って学びたいと思っています。
僕にとってドイツ語は…どう表現したらいいか分かりませんが、「洗練されている」「知的だ」「かっこいい」と感じます。
それがドイツ語を学びたい理由です。
ドイツ語は英語ととても似ています。
両方の言語は兄弟のような関係で、英語はドイツ語とフランス語が混ざったような言語だと言えます。
英語にはフランス語から来た単語もあれば、ドイツ語から来た単語もあります。
ドイツ語を見ていると、英語ととても似ている単語も多いですが、文法は英語とはかなり異なります。
これが挑戦でもあり、ドイツ語を学ぶ面白いポイントだと思います。
今のところスペイン語の再学習は考えていませんが、将来また挑戦する日が来るかもしれません。
ただ、それがいつになるかは分かりません。
今のところはアラビア語とドイツ語を続けようと思っています。
これが、これまで僕が学んできた言語です。
ある言語にはかなりの時間を費やしましたが、ほかの言語にはほとんど時間をかけていません。
