受け継がれた光 -茨城刺青祭 2024-

2024年8月24日、茨城県水戸市にて茨城刺青祭が開催されました。主催者の彫ともさんとは刺青の現場でよくお会いしており、スタジオを構える水戸でのイベントを撮影させていただく流れとなりました。

The Ibaraki Tattoo Festival was held in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture on August 24, 2024. I often meet the organizer, Hori Tomo-san, at tattoo studios, and I photographed the event in Mito, where he has his studio.

京都から茨城へ -From Kyoto to Ibaraki-

茨城はこれまでに刺青愛好会や夏のBBQで何度も訪れています。前日に京都から新幹線で東京の品川駅へ、時間があったので特急ではなく在来線で水戸へと向かいました。夕方、ホテルにチェックインして準備中のクラブVIBESを覗いていると彫師のゆりなさんがスタジオに案内してくれました。ビルの2階にあるのが彫ともさんの天狗党Horitomo Tattoo Studioです。

I have been to Ibaraki many times for tattoo clubs and summer BBQs. The day before, I took the Shinkansen from Kyoto to Shinagawa Station in Tokyo, and since I had time, I took a local train to Mito instead of the express train. In the evening, I checked into the hotel and was looking around the VIBES club, which was getting ready, when Yurina, the tattoo artist, showed me to the studio. On the second floor of the building is Horitomo's Tenguto Tattoo Studio.

仕事中の彫ともさんに彫師として現在にいたる経緯をお聞きすると、逆境のなかで試行錯誤してきた過去について話してくれました。少なくとも私の出会ってきたすべての彫師さんは多くの苦難を乗り越えてご自身の仕事を創り上げておられます。「すべての刺青の背後に彫師あり」という事実を再確認して明日の茨城刺青祭への期待も高まります。

夜は水戸から少し離れた赤塚にあるブックオフへ向かい、ジョニー・キャッシュ、ルイ・アームストロング、バド・パウエルの中古レコードを購入しました。ブックオフは店舗間で商品を移動させないとのことで、ジャズを丁寧に扱う商品棚から水戸の人々のジャズへの思いが感じられます。

ジャズの子がファンク、ファンクの子がヒップホップなら、祖父と孫の関係にあたるジャズとヒップホップは相性が良い、という菊地成孔さんの言葉を発展させて、ジャズが熱心に聴かれる土地ではヒップホップも盛り上がるだろうと考えながら灼熱の夜道を水戸まで歩いて帰りました。

When I asked Hori Tomo-san, who was working, about how he got to where he is today as a tattoo artist, he told me about his past of trial and error in the face of adversity. At least, all the tattooists I have met have overcome many hardships to create their work. Reaffirming the fact that "behind every tattoo there is a tattoo artist," my expectations for tomorrow's Ibaraki Tattoo Festival are rising.

In the evening, I went to Book Off in Akatsuka, a short distance from Mito, and bought used records by Johnny Cash, Louis Armstrong, and Bud Powell. Book Off does not move products between stores, and the shelves carefully handle jazz, giving a sense of the people of Mito's love for jazz.

If jazz is the son of funk and funk is the son of hip hop, then jazz and hip hop are like grandfather and grandson, so they go well together. Expanding on the words of Naruyoshi Kikuchi, I thought that hip hop would also be popular in a place where jazz is listened to enthusiastically, and walked back to Mito on the scorching hot night road.

茨城刺青祭の始まり -The Beginnings of the Ibaraki Tattoo Festival-

そして迎えた茨城刺青祭の当日、お隣の焼き鳥屋さんにて食事会をセッティングしていただき、タトゥーモデルとして参加する紗理奈さん、YUKIさん、REINAさんや恵子さん夫婦、彫師の彫右衛門さん達とともに水戸の味覚を堪能しました。

On the day of the Ibaraki Tattoo Festival, a dinner party was arranged for us at the yakitori restaurant next door, where we enjoyed the flavours of Mito together with tattoo models Sarina, YUKI, Reina, and her husband Keiko, as well as tattoo artist Horiemon.

クラブVIBESでは2階に4名の彫師のためのベッドが設置されており、1階にてライブペイント、地下ではライブが行われます。開演とともに人が集まってきました。世界から絶賛されている日本の刺青文化。国内では2018年のタトゥー裁判での医師法違反からの逆転無罪、そして近年のコロナ禍を経て各地でイベントが行われるようになり、そこから育つ若い才能がどのような作品を生み出していくのか楽しみです。日本では無名でも海外では有名というアーティストも増えてくるかもしれませんね。

Club VIBES has beds for four tattoo artists on the second floor, live painting on the first floor, and live music in the basement. People started gathering as soon as the show started. Japan's tattoo culture is admired around the world. In Japan, after a 2018 tattoo trial in which a man was found not guilty after violating the Medical Practitioners Act, and the recent COVID-19 pandemic, events have started to be held all over the country, and I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of work the young talents that emerge from these events will create. There may be an increase in artists who are unknown in Japan but famous overseas.

深夜に近づくころ、地下のフロアではヒップホップのライブが始まりました。MC、DJ、グラフィティ、ブレイクダンスがヒップホップの4大要素と呼ばれています。そこからさらにDJとトラックメイカーや、MCとタトゥーアーティストの関係まで眺める視野をもつことで音楽とタトゥーをより楽しめるのではないかと感じます。ロックンロールとタトゥー、意外なところではジャズの世界でも私のいちばん好きなアート・ペッパーはタトゥーを入れています。

As it got closer to midnight, a hip-hop live performance began on the basement floor. MC, DJ, graffiti, and breakdancing are said to be the four major elements of hip-hop. I feel that by looking beyond that and looking at the relationship between the DJ and the track maker, or the MC and the tattoo artist, you can enjoy music and tattoos even more. Rock and roll and tattoos, and surprisingly, my favorite jazz musician, Art Pepper, has tattoos.

ステージではDOWGさん、SMITH-CNさん、YASさん、VOCA Lucianoさん、UUUUさんという順番でMCが出演し、温かな雰囲気で会場を盛り上げました。ヒップホップとタトゥーから水戸、岡山、沖縄との繋がりが見えたことも興味深かったです。自分の出会ったものを通して心の地図を更新する作業は生活に色彩を与えてくれます。

On stage, the MCs appeared in the order of DOWG, SMITH-CN, YAS, VOCA Luciano, and UUUU, creating a warm atmosphere in the venue. It was also interesting to see the connection between Mito, Okayama, and Okinawa through hip-hop and tattoos. Updating the map of my heart through the things I encounter adds color to my life.

どの場所でもタトゥーガールズは注目を集めていました。日本で総身彫りの女性はまだ少なく、集まる機会も少ないゆえに美しさと迫力をまとって生きる作品の集合体には見応えがあります。紗理奈さん、YUKIさん、REINAさん、恵子さん。刺青愛好会で出会ったときからすでに全身の刺青をほぼ完成させていた4人です。

もしもここが海外の巨大なタトゥーコンベンションであったとしても、会場の空気を変えてしまう4人なのだろうなあと、憧れの情景に想いを馳せました。

Wherever they went, the Tattoo Girls attracted attention. There are still not many women in Japan with full body tattoos, and because there are few opportunities for them to gather together, the collection of beautiful and powerful works is worth seeing. Sarina, YUKI, Reina, and Keiko. When we met at the tattoo club, these four had already almost completed full body tattoos.

I imagined that even if this were a huge tattoo convention overseas, these four would change the atmosphere of the venue, and recalled the scene I long to see.

過去から未来へ -From the past to the future-

7月に石川県にて開催された金沢刺青祭、そこに設置された能登半島地震の被災地への募金提灯は茨城刺青祭へと受け継がれていました。どの場所にも存在している人間の営み。金沢から茨城へ、絶やされることのない想いは必ず未来への光になると感じます。彫ともさんの誕生日のお祝いの後で振る舞っていただいたテキーラを飲み、乾杯と笑顔に満ちた会場を後にしました。

The Kanazawa Tattoo Festival was held in Ishikawa Prefecture in July, and the lanterns that were set up there to raise funds for the areas affected by the Noto Peninsula earthquake were passed on to the Ibaraki Tattoo Festival. Human activities exist in every place. From Kanazawa to Ibaraki, the never-ending passion will surely become a light for the future. After celebrating Horitomo's birthday, I drank the tequila that was served to us, and left the venue full of cheers and smiles.
