折り重なる記憶 -THE INK FACTORY 2024-
2024年9月13日から15日まで、フランスのリヨンにて開催されたTHE INK FACTORY 2024を取材させていただきました。初めて体験する海外のタトゥーコンベンションに衝撃を受けたのは昨年の春、それがTHE INK FACTORY 2023でした。
I covered THE INK FACTORY 2024, which took place in Lyon, France from September 13th to 15th, 2024. It was last spring when I was shocked by my first experience of an overseas tattoo convention, which was THE INK FACTORY 2023.

大阪、台北、パリ -Osaka,Taipei and Paris-
今回の旅はベトナム、ドイツ、中国でお世話になった日本人彫師のゆう悟さと経由地の台北で合流してからフランスを目指します。台湾桃園国際空港のレストランにてゆう悟さんと食事をして搭乗した台湾のエバー航空の機体はパリへと飛び立ちました。
東南アジアを旅していた頃は自分にとって遠い憧れの地だったヨーロッパ。それがタトゥーを撮り始めて一気に身近な場所へと変貌しました。新しい出会い、広がった世界、いつまでも色褪せない感覚。
On this trip, I will meet up with Japanese tattoo artist Yugo, who has helped me in Vietnam, Germany, and China, in Taipei, where I will then head to France. After having dinner with Yugo at a restaurant at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, I boarded an EVA Air flight from Taiwan and took off to Paris.
When I was traveling in Southeast Asia, Europe was a faraway place I longed to visit. But when I started taking photos of tattoos, it suddenly became a familiar place. New encounters, a wider world, a feeling that never fades.

パリのシャルル・ド・ゴール空港に到着後、人に尋ねるたびに変化するレンタカーオフィスの場所に翻弄されながら、さらに保険の複合的な手続きを経て借りることのできたトヨタのYARIS。国際免許を持つゆう悟さんの運転で脱出するように空港から市内へと向かいました。
4年ぶりのパリ。古い建物が美しく切り取る空の形を見ると「ああ、パリに来たんだな」と実感します。私の記憶の中にあるカンボジア、ベトナム、ラオスの町に溶け込んだフランスの影響が現在と共鳴する瞬間でもあります。およそ100年前にパリで暮らした18歳の岡本太郎が見たのもこのような空だったのでしょうか。
After arriving at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris, we were at the mercy of the rental car office, whose location changed every time we asked, and after going through the complicated insurance procedures, we were able to rent a Toyota Yaris. Yugo, who has an international driver's license, drove us from the airport to the city as if we were escaping.
It's been four years since my last visit to Paris. When I see the sky beautifully framed by the old buildings, I realize I'm in Paris. It's also the moment when the French influence that permeates the towns of Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos in my memory resonates with the present. I wonder if this is the sky that Taro Okamoto, an 18-year-old living in Paris about 100 years ago, saw.

フランス1日目はパリの中心地にあるSYLVINE FLEURSというお花屋さんの地下のタトゥースタジオに滞在させてもらえることになりました。パリのお花屋さんに泊まれるなんて夢のようです。レストランで夕方からワインを飲み、いつの間にか歓迎パーティーになりました。現地のダルマヌさんとセリーヌさんに感謝します。
On the first day in France, I was allowed to stay at a tattoo studio in the basement of a flower shop called SYLVINE FLEURS in the center of Paris. It was like a dream to stay at a flower shop in Paris. We drank wine in the evening at a restaurant, and before we knew it, it had become a welcome party. I would like to thank the locals, Darumanu and Celine.

パリからリヨンへ -On the road from Paris to Lyon-
翌日はいよいよTHE INK FACTORYの会場であるリヨンを目指します。パリから南へ460キロ、6時間の旅。電車やバスに比べると時間に制約されない車の移動は新鮮で快適でした。それは運転してくれたゆう悟さんにとっても同じだったようで、次はヨーロッパを車で巡りましょうという話をしました。ゆう悟さんはもともと音楽関係の仕事をされていたため共通の話題が多く、芸術全般に敬意を払っておられます。私は絵が下手なので絵を描ける人の考え方から学ぶことは多いです。一直線の高速道路を走行する車は夕方のリヨンへ到着しました。
ソーヌ川とローヌ川というふたつの川の合流する自然豊かなフランス第二の都市リヨン。どことなく京都の風景を思い出すのは、私自身が長く京都に住んでいるからでしょうか。明日からコンベンションの開催される会場への搬入を終えてエアビーアンドビーの宿にチェックイン、前夜祭に参加して宿に帰るという慌ただしい流れ。夜は無料になる路上パーキングに車を停め、精算機に翌日の出発時間をセットしてカードで支払いをしておくという方法を身に付けました。
The next day, we finally headed to Lyon, the venue for THE INK FACTORY. It was a 460km, 6-hour journey south from Paris. Traveling by car, which was not restricted by time, was refreshing and comfortable compared to trains and buses. It seemed that Yugo, who was driving, felt the same way, and we talked about driving around Europe next time. Yugo originally worked in the music industry, so we had a lot in common and he respects art in general. I'm not good at drawing, so I often learn from the way people who can draw think. The car, which was traveling along a straight highway, arrived in Lyon in the evening.
Lyon is France's second largest city, rich in nature, where the two rivers, the Saône and the Rhône, meet. The scenery reminded me of Kyoto, perhaps because I've lived in Kyoto for a long time myself. It was a hectic flow of finishing the loading at the venue where the convention will be held from the next day, checking into an Airbnb accommodation, participating in the eve of the festival, and returning to the accommodation. I've gotten used to parking my car in free street parking at night, setting the next day's departure time in the machine, and paying with my card.

夜は暗くて少し怖い町の雰囲気も、朝になると一転して優しい光に包まれます。エアビーアンドビーではホテルではなく現地の人々が暮らす空き部屋に泊まるため、旅行者よりも生活者に近い視点を得られることが魅力ですね。それはホテルでの非日常感とも、いつもの暮らしの日常とも違う感覚。この記事を日本で書きながら、自分は本当にあの場所にいたのだろうかという不思議な気持ちになります。窓の外は青い空。
The town's dark and slightly scary atmosphere at night changes completely when the morning comes, and it's enveloped in gentle light. With Airbnb, you stay not in a hotel but in a vacant room where locals live, so the appeal is that you can get a perspective closer to that of a local person than a tourist. It's a different feeling from the extraordinary feeling of a hotel and the everyday life of everyday life. As I write this article in Japan, I have a strange feeling that I was really in that place. Outside the window is a blue sky.

トニー・ガルニエ・ホール -Halle Tony Garnier-
いよいよ迎えたTHE INK FACTORY 2024、まず触れておきたいのは今回からの会場として選ばれたトニー・ガルニエ・ホールです。ここはもともと都市計画家であり建築家のトニー・ガルニエ氏が100年以上前に建設した屠殺場を多目的ホールとして改装した建物です。この場所を見ることも楽しみのひとつでした。階段状の外観からは想像できない圧倒的な空間。興味のある方は公式サイトから写真をご覧になれます。
THE INK FACTORY 2024 has finally arrived, and the first thing I want to mention is Tony Garnier Hall, which has been chosen as the venue for this event. This building was originally a slaughterhouse built by urban planner and architect Tony Garnier over 100 years ago, and has been renovated into a multi-purpose hall. One of the things I was looking forward to was seeing this place. The stepped exterior creates an overwhelming space that is hard to imagine. 上記はコンサートを開催したミュージシャンの記録の一部。いずれも日本の音楽フェスにメインアクトとして来日する顔ぶれです。インターネットやスマホのなかった90年代、私が地元のCD店の試聴機のヘッドホンで夢中になって聴いた音楽を鳴らしていた方々がここにいた事実。
屠殺場として、コンサートホールとして使用されてきたトニー・ガルニエ・ホール。動物の死の記憶、音楽の熱狂の記憶、それらを収容してきた建築物がタトゥーコンベンションの会場になるという流れには驚きではなく物語としての必然性さえ感じられます。コンベンションの1日目は9月13日の金曜日、これは不吉あるいは幸運の象徴でしょうか。昨夜の搬入時と違って昼間のホールは自然光の差し込む明るい空間です。
ゆう悟さんのタトゥーブースは昨年も参加されておられた臥竜さんと、10月に木更津でTOKYO BAY TATTOO FESTIVALを開催される彫茂さんの間にあり、ちょっとした日本人街のようでした。
The above is a part of the record of the musicians who held the concert. All of them are the main acts who come to Japan for Japanese music festivals. In the 90s, when there was no internet or smartphones, the people who played the music I listened to so enthusiastically on the headphones of the local CD store were here.
Tony Garnier Hall has been used as a slaughterhouse and a concert hall. It is not surprising that a building that has housed the memories of the death of animals and the frenzy of music has become the venue for a tattoo convention, and there is even a sense of inevitability in the story. The first day of the convention is Friday, September 13th, which is a symbol of bad luck or good fortune. Unlike last night's loading, the hall is a bright space with natural light pouring in during the day.
Yugo's tattoo booth is located between Garyou, who also participated last year, and Horishige, who will be holding the TOKYO BAY TATTOO FESTIVAL in Kisarazu in October, and it felt like a little Japanese town.

日本の刺青 -Japanese Tattoo-
どのコンベンションに行っても注目しているのがコンテストの「日本の刺青」部門です。今回は女性の背中の作品が優勝しました。アーティスト、エントリーする人、審査員、いずれも日本人はいませんが、タトゥー文化のもとで人種や国籍にこだわることは無意味なのかもしれません。
日本で生まれたものが海外でアップデートされ、日本に環流されてさらに成熟してゆくというポジティブな現象。ソフトウェアの世界と重ね合わせるならば、クローズドソースのように師匠から弟子にだけ伝承されていた技術がオープンソースとして全世界に開いている状態、それが現在なのでしょう。
What I pay attention to at every convention is the "Japanese Tattoo" contest. This time, the winner was a work on a woman's back. None of the artists, entrants, or judges were Japanese, but perhaps it's pointless to be obsessed with race or nationality when it comes to tattoo culture.
It's a positive phenomenon in which something born in Japan is updated overseas, circulated back to Japan, and further matured. If we compare it to the world of software, it's like the technology that was once passed down only from master to apprentice as closed source is now open to the whole world as open source.

会場を歩いて印象に残ったのは、ブースを仕切るそれぞれのパーテーションの端に展示されているBrice Gelotさんの写真でした。ある程度離れた位置から見ても何を撮ろうとしたのかが明確にわかる数十枚の大きなモノクローム写真が空間にアクセントを与えています。明確な意志がなければ撮れない写真が発する明確な意志。
タトゥーについても目の肥えた人ほど数メートル以上離れた地点からの作品の見え方を重視する傾向があります。スマートフォンの小さな画面では得られない情報量がそこにはありました。
What made an impression on me as I walked around the venue were the photographs by Brice Gelot displayed at the ends of each partition separating the booths. Dozens of large monochrome photographs, which make it clear what the photographer was trying to capture even when viewed from a certain distance, accentuate the space. The photographs express a clear will, one that could only be taken with a clear will.
When it comes to tattoos, people with a discerning eye tend to place importance on how the work looks from a distance of more than a few meters. There was a wealth of information there that you just can't get on the small screen of a smartphone.

3日間 -three days-
ほとんどのタトゥーコンベンションが採用している3日間という期間、それは来場者にとっても、またアーティストにとってもちょうど良い時間の長さなのだろうと思います。しかしいつも実感するのは3日間に起こる出来事の何%に自分は触れられるのだろうということです。その事実にいつも絶望しては一歩を踏み出すという行為を繰り返しています。
一方で3日の間に彫られた作品が、その人のその後の生涯にずっと寄り添うことを思うと、タトゥーの世界に限りないロマンを感じます。
例のごとくあっという間に過ぎ去った3日間。その体験を言葉にするほど大切なことから遠ざかるように思えて、実現するならばぜひ現場で体験して欲しいというのが変わらざる思いです。私の撮る写真や映像がそのきっかけになれば幸せです。
Most tattoo conventions are held over three days, which I think is just the right length for both visitors and artists. However, I always wonder what percentage of the events that take place over those three days I will be able to experience. I always despair at this fact and then take another step forward.
On the other hand, when I think about the fact that the work carved over those three days will stay with the person for the rest of their lives, I feel an infinite romance in the world of tattoos.
As usual, the three days passed in the blink of an eye. The more I put the experience into words, the further away I feel from something important, and I would like people to experience it in person if it were possible. I would be happy if the photos and videos I take can be a catalyst for that.

THE INK FACTORYは日本語で「タトゥーの工場」。それが今回からの会場、トニー・ガルニエ・ホールの印象と作用し合ってイメージは新しく、そこで彫られた作品とともにさらに鮮明な記憶として定着しました。数十年後、数百年後という地点から現在を眺めたときの記憶の糸が織りなすプロダクトに想いを馳せて。
THE INK FACTORY means "tattoo factory" in Japanese. This image, combined with the impression of the venue, Tony Garnier Hall, created a new image, and together with the works tattooed there, it became an even clearer memory. Imagine the products woven with threads of memory when looking at the present from a point of view several decades or hundreds of years in the future.

主催者のテオは私が日本で撮影している刺青愛好会に関心を持ってくれており、日本とフランスとの距離も縮まってきています。タトゥーという世界地図のレイヤーの下で意味を失う国境の概念と、いまだに特殊な日本国内の刺青の状況。それらを媒介する動きが自分の仕事であると信じています。
The organizer, Teo, is interested in the Japanese tattoo club (IREZUMI AIKOKAI) I am photographing in Japan, and the distance between Japan and France is also getting closer. The concept of borders that lose their meaning under the layer of the world map of tattoos, and the situation of tattoos in Japan, which is still unique.
