思いやりと喜びの祭り -金沢刺青祭 2024-
2024年7月13日から15日まで、石川県にて開催された金沢刺青祭を取材させて頂きました。このイベントはモデルのゆうきさんが彫師のあかつきさんとともに参加されるということで、昨年から予定を組んでいました。刺青愛好会やKING OF TATTOO以外では初めての国内のタトゥーイベントの撮影です。3月のベトナム、4月のドイツ、5月の中国の旅を経て日本の刺青の景色に触れるべく夏の金沢へと向かいました。
I covered the Kanazawa Tattoo Festival, held in Ishikawa Prefecture from July 13th to 15th, 2024. I had been planning this event since last year, as model Yuuki was going to participate with tattoo artist Akatsuki. This was my first time photographing a domestic tattoo event outside of the Tattoo Lovers Club and KING OF TATTOO. After traveling to Vietnam in March, Germany in April, and China in May, I headed to Kanazawa in the summer to experience the Japanese tattoo scene.
7月12日 -京都から金沢-
北陸新幹線の開通により京都と金沢を結んでいたサンダーバード号が今年から廃止になり、電車を乗り換える旅よりも京都駅から金沢駅まで直通のバスに乗ってみようということで片道5時間の高速バスの旅です。大雨の渋滞で出発が1時間遅れましたが、20時間かけて飛行機でヨーロッパに飛ぶことに比べるとはるかに快適です。
予約していたホテルパシフィック金沢にチェックインすると、受付のお兄さんが話しかけてくださりました。刺青のイベントを撮影しに来たことを伝えると、主催者の彫童（ほりどう）さんのことを知っており「彫童さんは僕らの世代のレジェンドですから」と教えてくれました。「ああ、この町には刺青の文化が根付いている」と感じるとともに、その後実際に彫童さんに出会うことでレジェンドの意味を知ることになります。
With the opening of the Hokuriku Shinkansen, the Thunderbird service that connected Kyoto and Kanazawa was discontinued this year, so instead of changing trains, I decided to take a direct bus from Kyoto Station to Kanazawa Station, which took me 5 hours one way. Although the departure was delayed by an hour due to heavy rain, it was much more comfortable than flying to Europe for 20 hours.
When I checked in to my reserved Hotel Pacific Kanazawa, the young man at the reception spoke to me. When I told him I was there to film a tattoo event, he knew the organizer, Horidoh, and told me, "Horidoh is a legend of our generation." I realized, "Ah, tattoo culture is deeply rooted in this town," and later learned the meaning of "legend" when I actually met Horidoh.
明日から開催される会場を見ておこうと歩いてDOUBLE金沢へ。1階と2階は20名の彫師が3日間刺青を彫り、地下では1日目に泡祭 金沢 -DEDICATED TO GENJIRO-、2日目に宇宙警備隊のライブ、3日目には身体改造ジャーナリストのケロッピー前田さんの講演や刺青愛好会の撮影が行われます。地上では刺青、地下では音楽ライブが同時進行するという贅沢な展開です。
I walked to DOUBLE Kanazawa to check out the venue, which will be held from tomorrow. On the first and second floors, 20 tattoo artists will be tattooing for three days, while in the basement, there will be the Bubble Festival Kanazawa -DEDICATED TO GENJIRO- on the first day, a live performance by the Space Patrol on the second day, and a lecture by body modification journalist Keroppy Maeda and filming by a Tattoo Lovers Club -IREZUMI AIKOKAI- on the third day. It's a luxurious event with tattoos on the ground and live music in the basement going on at the same time.

彫童さんの軌跡
2階に上がると一気に視界が変化して昔の日本にタイムスリップしたかのような和の空間が出現します。海外のタトゥーイベントでも伝統的な手彫りの彫師は椅子ではなく床に座って刺青を彫り、ドイツのGODS OF INKでも同様の畳の部屋がありましたが、木材を組んで内装の細部までプロデュースした空間作りは世界でも初めてではないでしょうか。彫師の中野寿楼さんらとともに手がけられた仕事の迫力に驚きました。
電動ドライバーで仕事中の彫童さんにお話を聞くと、スクリプト（文字）のタトゥーのカリスマ、NORM、BOOG STARやオークランドのFreddy Corbin、ニューヨークのChris Garver、Charlie Roberts、Lucky Bastard、LONG BEACH DUB ALL STARSのボーカリストでもあるOpie Ortiz、Permanent Mark、Clay Decker氏など海外から多くのタトゥーアーティストをゲストワークに迎えている実績、さらに2003年頃から数年に渡り宇宙警備隊として国内最大規模の音楽フェスの舞台装飾を手がける仕事も手がけられており、ひとつの分野にとどまらないクロスオーバーな動きで文化を創造してこられた軌跡が見えてきます。それらの活動の結晶として金沢刺青祭があることを実感するとともに、明日からここでどのような作品が生み出されるのか、期待が高まります。
When I went up to the second floor, my view changed instantly, and a Japanese space appeared, as if I had traveled back in time to old Japan. At tattoo events overseas, traditional hand-bori tattooists sit on the floor instead of on a chair to tattoo, and there was a similar tatami room at GODS OF INK in Germany, but this is probably the first time in the world that a space has been created with wooden assemblies and the interior produced down to the last detail. I was amazed at the power of the work that was done together with tattooist Jiro Nakano and others.
As I talked to Horidoh, who was working with an electric screwdriver, I learned that he has worked with many tattoo artists from overseas, including script tattoo gurus NORM, BOOG STAR, Freddy Corbin from Oakland, Chris Garver from New York, Charlie Roberts, Lucky Bastard, Opie Ortiz, vocalist of LONG BEACH DUB ALL STARS, Permanent Mark, and Clay Decker, and that he has also worked on the stage decorations for Japan's largest music festival as part of the Space Guard for several years since around 2003, revealing his history of creating culture through crossover movements that go beyond one field. I realized that the Kanazawa Tattoo Festival is the culmination of all of these activities, and I'm excited to see what kind of works will be created here from tomorrow.
7月13日 -1日目-
午前中に始まりの儀が行われるとのことで、良く晴れた空の下を会場へ向かいます。昨日からの設営を経て完成した2階の部屋で宮司（ぐうじ）さんのお祓いとお清め、関口流抜刀術の四方祓いが行われました。日本全国から集まった彫師とスタッフ、神の宿る静寂、空気を切り裂く刀の速度、それらに色彩を与えるかのように風鈴の音が鳴り響いていました。
The ceremony to begin was to be held in the morning, so we headed to the venue under a clear, sunny sky. After construction had begun yesterday, the second floor room was completed, and the chief priest performed a purification and purification ritual, followed by the Sekiguchi-ryu sword-drawing technique of four-way purification. The tattooists and staff gathered from all over Japan, the silence where the gods reside, and the speed of the swords cutting through the air were all accentuated by the sound of wind chimes.
そしていよいよ正午の開場となりました。金沢刺青祭は一般的なタトゥーコンベンションとは違ってコンテストがあるわけではなく、純粋なお祭りが3日間続きます。そこで彫られた作品は「祭りのなかで生まれた刺青」という祝祭的な意味を持ち、生涯に渡ってその人を幸せにしてくれるという物語が自然と頭の中に紡ぎ出されるようです。イタリアからJAPANESE TUXEDOというメディアも来日しており、国際的な関心の高さがうかがえます。
Finally, at noon, the doors opened. The Kanazawa Tattoo Festival is different from other tattoo conventions in that there is no contest, but rather it is a pure festival that continues for three days. The tattoos created there have a celebratory meaning as "tattoos born in the festival", and it seems that a story of how they will bring happiness to the person for the rest of their life is naturally spun in their minds. The Italian media outlet JAPANESE TUXEDO was also in Japan, showing the high level of international interest.
泡祭のタイムテーブルを確認しながら出演者を魚眼レンズで撮影しました。カメラマンに人気のない魚眼レンズですが、こちらから一歩踏み込めば写真に迫力を閉じ込めることができ、ライブでは必ず使用しています。
While checking the timetable for the Bubble Festival, I took photos of the performers with a fisheye lens. Fisheye lenses are not popular among photographers, but if you take a step further, you can capture the power of the scene in your photos, so I always use them at live performances.
今回楽しみにしていたことのひとつは京都のバンド、WARHEADの出演です。ボーカルのJUNさんは近所のスーパーの魚売り場で話しかけて、その後一緒にお花見をしたり京都の向島でお世話になっています。彼のバンドを金沢で見られるというのも刺青が繋いでくれた縁ですね。ライブもすさまじい迫力でした。
One of the things I was looking forward to this time was the performance of WARHEAD, a band from Kyoto. I first met JUN, the lead singer, at the fish counter of a local supermarket, and we went cherry blossom viewing together and stayed with him in Mukaijima, Kyoto. I think it was a connection that was made possible by my tattoos that I was able to see his band in Kanazawa. Their live performance was also incredibly impressive.
3つのフロアを行き来しているうちに日は暮れて、1日目のクライマックスは切腹ピストルズのライブで締められました。会場の外で演奏しながら地下に降りていく演出、狂喜乱舞する観客。これまで多くの音楽の現場を撮影してきましたが「とんでもないことが目の前で起きている」というかつてない衝撃はホテルに帰ってからも消えない余韻として残り続けました。鼓膜の残響、網膜の残像。
As we went back and forth between the three floors, the sun went down, and the climax of the first day was a live performance by the Seppuku Pistols. The performance included the band performing outside the venue while descending into the basement, and the audience dancing wildly in ecstasy. I have photographed many music venues up until now, but the shock of seeing something incredible happening right before my eyes was something I had never experienced before, and it lingered in my mind even after I returned to the hotel. The reverberation in my eardrums, the afterimage on my retina.
7月14日 -2日目-
2日目はより冷静に彫師さんの仕事を観察できました。同時にいくつもの刺青が肌に刻まれていく様子は森のなかに育つ無数の植物のように、地上に落ちた種子が成長してゆく過程を連想させます。地下では宇宙警備隊 presentsのライブが行われました。
On the second day, we were able to calmly observe the tattooists at work. The sight of multiple tattoos being engraved into the skin at the same time reminded us of the process of seeds that fell to the ground growing, like countless plants growing in a forest. A live performance presented by the Space Patrol was held in the basement.
終演後に鳥貴族で焼鳥を食べていると、たまたま隣に座った20代の若者2人が話しかけてくれて、一緒に2軒目へ行きました。京都でこんなことはなかなか起こらないなと感じた嬉しい出来事でした。深夜2時まで飲んで彼らに教わった「金沢ではコンドームを忘れても傘は忘れるな」というミステリアスな教えを反復しながら濡れた路上を歩いて帰りました。
After the show, I was eating yakitori at Torikizoku when two young people in their twenties happened to be sitting next to me and started talking to me, so we went to a second bar together. It was a happy event that made me realize that something like this rarely happens in Kyoto. We drank until 2am, and walked home on the wet streets repeating the mysterious proverb they taught me: "In Kanazawa, you may forget your condom, but never forget your umbrella."
7月15日 -3日目-
3日目の最終日は刺青愛好会の方々が集まりました。撮影を開始したのは2017年、当時は小さかった集まりも今では日本最大規模になりました。ケロッピー前田さんが顔面にフックを刺して吊るされている映像を見ながら賑やかに撮影を行いました。現在は身体改造と刺青、それぞれの熱狂的な愛好家同士の交流が生まれており、8月25日の茨城でのBBQ、9月22日に開催される刺青愛好会 in 大阪 2024も楽しみにしています。
On the final day, the third day, a Tattoo Lovers Club -IREZUMI AIKOKAI- gathered. Filming began in 2017, and what was a small gathering at the time has now become the largest in Japan. The group had a lively shoot while watching a video of Keroppy Maeda being hung with a hook in his face. Now, the club is a place where enthusiastic enthusiasts of both body modification and tattooing can come together, and we are looking forward to the BBQ in Ibaraki on August 25th and the Tattoo Lovers Club -IREZUMI AIKOKAI- in Osaka 2024 on September 22nd.
あっという間の3日間が終わりを迎えようとするそのとき、彫童さんに「金沢刺青祭でいちばん大切にしていることは何ですか？」と質問すると「思いやりです」と答えてくれました。今も続く1月1日に起きた石川県能登半島地震の被災地の復興。昨年の9月から準備を進めているなかで震災を経験しながらも素晴らしいお祭りを実行して多くの人が集まり、少なくはない金額が被災地へと送られました。そこには「思いやり」という言葉の背後にある人間の強さと温かさを感じます。日本に暮らす多くの人にとって刺青が震災の復興に結びつくとは信じられないことかもしれません。しかしそれは確実に成し遂げられました。
日本の刺青を見る新しい視点を得られたこと、彫童さんをはじめとする多くの方々に出会えたこと、撮影者として受け入れて頂けたこと、素晴らしい瞬間に立ち会えたことに感謝いたします。
As the three days flew by and drew to a close, I asked Horidoh, "What is the most important thing about the Kanazawa Tattoo Festival?" and he answered, "Compassion." The reconstruction of the areas affected by the Noto Peninsula earthquake that occurred on January 1st in Ishikawa Prefecture is still ongoing. Preparations have been underway since September of last year, and despite the earthquake, they managed to put together a wonderful festival that attracted many people and donated a significant amount of money to the disaster-stricken areas. There, I feel the strength and warmth of the people behind the word "compassion." For many people living in Japan, it may be hard to believe that tattoos can contribute to the reconstruction of the area after the earthquake. However, it has certainly been achieved.
I am grateful for gaining a new perspective on Japanese tattoos, for having had the opportunity to meet so many people including Horidoh, for being accepted as a photographer, and for having been able to witness such a wonderful moment.
