My business trip to Taiwan
I have been working as an "overseas sales rep. (international sales rep.)" since I graduated from Kansai Gaidai university.
I think some people are not familiar with my job. It involves business communications with customers outside Japan. For me, I was in charge of customers in Japan and outside Japan and did sales activities mainly in foreign countries and works related with them.
(, such as products installation/installation instructions, trading business, technical translations/interpretation, communications with customers by emails/telephones, communications involves technical things business trips to foreign countries and guiding customers overseas in Japan when they come to Japan and so on...)
From now on, I want to write about the stories of the installation supervising overseas.
I instructed customers how to install products for the first time in Taiwan. I actually went to Taiwan several times as sales/interpreter but that was my first time to visit Taiwan as a supervisor/interpreter.
Once the company ordered me to go there, I tried to memorize English words including technical terms and expressions related with the work. In Taiwan, kanji characters are more useful than English words, especially in Taiwan. (However, when communicating with the sales from the local representative, English was needed, anyway.
I learned the procedures (steps) of installing the products, important notes when installation works, referring to the manuals in Japanese and English. Difficult technical terms do exist in the industry and I learned such words over and over again to come out naturally.
As for the tools, Katakana are used for naming the tools, however, Katakana are sometimes useless. (ex. Monkey wrench→adjustable wrench.)
When preparing tools for business trips, I learned new things.
The preparation is actually tough and challenging, therefore, when the communication was done properly and the products were installed properly, I was really satisfied. I used to learn how to install products and practiced installation by myself.
By doing these things, I communicated with the local sales and the workers in the factory without troubles and customer's installation works were done without any troubles.
