How to read a numbers in Japanese

外国の方が困りそうな日本語を取り上げていくので、もし日本語を教える機会があればどうぞお役立てください。

今回は、counting monthsです。

the Name of months

1月  ichigatsu
2月 nigatsu
3月 sangatsu
4月 shigatsu. It’s not “yongatsu”.
5月 gogatsu
6月 rokugatsu
7月 Shichigatsu. It’s not “nanagatsu”.
8月 hachigatsu
9月 kugatsu. It’s not “kyu-gatsu”.
10月 ju-gatsu
11月 ju-ichigatsu
12月 ju-nigatsu

How to count months

1 month  1ヶ月 ikkagetsu. not “ichikagetsu”.
2 months 2ヶ月 nikagetsu
3 months 3ヶ月 sankagetsu
4 months 4ヶ月 yonkagetsu. not “shikagetsu”.
5 months 5ヶ月 gokagetsu
6 months 6ヶ月 rokkagetsu. not”rokukagetsu”.
7 months 7ヶ月 nanakagetsu. not”shichikagetsu”
8 month 8ヶ月 hakkagetsu or hachikagetsu. The last one is a little more formal.
9 months 9ヶ月 kyu-kagetsu. not “kukagetsu”.
10 months 10ヶ月 jyukkagetsu. not “ju-kagetsu”.
11 months 11ヶ月 jyu-ikkagetsu or jyu-ichikagetsu. The last one is a little more formal.
12 months 12ヶ月 jyu-nikagetsu
13 months 13ヶ月 jyu-sankagetsu
14 months 14ヶ月 jyu-yonkagetsu
15 months 15ヶ月 jyu-gokagetsu
half month 半月 hantsuki
1.5 months 1.5ヶ月 ittengokagetsu
1 and a half months 1ヶ月半　ikkagetsuhan
