Vol. 21 Japan's proud Shinkansen 日本が誇る新幹線

そう！実は新幹線の中です。In the Shinkansen (bullet train)!!

私が生まれたときには新幹線は毎日はしっており、「普通の電車よりちょっと特別な電車」という認識しかありませんでした。

When I was born, bullet train was already running everyday. "Shinkansen is a bit special train." That was my first impression of shinkansen.

でも、昔あった「プロジェクトX」という番組で新幹線ができるまでの苦労や努力をTVで観たり、別の番組でも新幹線を取り上げたりしているのを観て、新幹線のすばらしさを再認識しました。

However, when I watched TV program, "Project X", that introduced how much effort they made to built shinkansen, I got much better opinion about shinkansen.

その中でも新幹線にまつわる印象深いことを2つご紹介します。

Today, I will share two things that I got impressive most about shinkansen.

1つ目は、新幹線は世界に誇る技術と安全性です。

First, its world-class technology and safety.

2年前に台湾に旅行に行った時のこと。
私は日帰りで台北から台中に旅行に行きました。
台北から台中に移動するのは台湾高速鉄道という電車です。

It's 2 years ago when I visited Taiwan. I headed from Taipei to Taichung and used a train called Taiwan High Speed Rail.

早速乗ってみると、既視感！！！！
「？？？」と思って細部をよく見たら、新幹線にそっくりということに気づきました。

I stepped into it then felt like "I knew this!" As I looked carefully then realized it was very similar to shinkansen.

実は日本の新幹線の技術が初めて海外に導入されたのが「台湾高速鉄道」なんだそう。
その時私は、日本の技術や安全性が海外に認められて取り入れられていることに、とても嬉しくそして誇らしく思いました。
日本人は謙遜の文化があり、さらに私たちの年代では欧米より劣っていると思う教育があったので、より嬉しかったのかもしれません。

Actually, it was Taiwan High Speed Rail that the technology of Japan's Shinkansen was first introduced overseas. At that time, I was very happy and proud that Japanese technology and safety were recognized and adopted overseas.
I may have been more joyful because in our age, Japanese had a humble culture and an education that we think we were inferior to the West.

2つ目は新幹線の車内清掃。

Secondly, the cleaning inside of shinkansen!

見たことがある方もいらっしゃるかもしれませんが、新幹線の車内清掃は「新幹線劇場」「奇跡の7分間」と言われるほど、早くて綺麗です。

You may have seen it but their inside cleaning up for shinkansen is amazingly fast and beautiful. People say "Shinkansen theater" or "Miracle 7 minutes".  

東京駅のホームにいるピンク色の制服を身にまとった清掃員は、ホームに滑り込んできた車両が、折り返し新大阪方面に向けて出発するまで平均１６分程度の間、「超特急」並みのスピードでこなさなければいけません。

Cleaning staff in pink uniforms at Tokyo station have to finish their job like the rapid train in 16 minutes while the shinkansen gets into platform and departs for Osaka again. 

ほこりを掃き、窓やテーブルを拭き、座席カバーを取り換える。
手には、電動クリーナーやゴミ袋をもち、１０分足らずですべての車両をピカピカにすると、ホームで乗車を待つ乗客に一礼。風のように去っていきます。

They sweep the dust and wipe windows and tables. Change the seat covers.  They hold an electronic vacuum and a trash bag in one hand and finish all the cleanings in less than 10 minutes. Bow to the passenger and leave like the wind.

新幹線と速度競争を繰り広げ「技術力では負けない」と自負する欧州の高速鉄道ＴＧＶ。運行するフランス国鉄総裁も視察に訪れてすっかり脱帽し、こんな言葉を残しています。
「これだけはかなわない。清掃員を連れて帰りたい」

The European high-speed railway TGV is proud of the fact that it competes with the Shinkansen in speed competition and that it cannot be defeated by its technological capabilities. The French National Railway's governor visited the site and took off his hat.
"This is wonderful. I want to take cleaners home with me."

また清掃員はただ清掃するだけでなく、東北新幹線などを担当する清掃員は利用客に「魅せる清掃」を楽しんでもらおうと、アロハシャツや浴衣、冬はサンタクロースの衣装などを身につけます。

In addition, the cleaning staff in charge of the Tohoku Shinkansen wears aloha shirts, yukata and Santa Claus costumes in winter so that the customers can enjoy more to see the attractive way of cleaning.

それだけでなく、子どもがホームを走り回らないよう新幹線のシールを配ったり、大きな荷物を抱えた年配の乗客がいれば階段の上り下りを手伝います。そして乗り換えの案内や出発時刻を尋ねられれば答えてくれる「新幹線のスペシャリスト」なのです。

They also distribute shinkansen stickers to prevent children from running around the platform, and help senior citizens with large luggage carry up and down stairs. They are "specialists for the shinkansen" who will answer everything if you ask for transfer information or departure time.
