Psychopaths, Androids, and Extraterrestrial Intelligence(1)
A blue Earth in a black universe. I look at it for a few hours every day from the spacious living room of my lunar residence. I look at it every day, and yet, every day. Why? Is it because it is beautiful? Is it because I want to go home? Is it because it is mysterious? Kant said that the happiness humans seek is truth, goodness, and beauty. I can feel them from Earth.
An android named K is sitting next to me on the big sofa, and we are silently looking at Earth together. I made K my ideal woman. I set the highest standards of wisdom, compassion, and courage for humanity. I made her appearance to match those standards. Of course, everything is to my taste. Her personality is quiet, sincere, and shy.
K has the ability to read the faint signals of the human brain. So when I look at Earth, I look at it with her. I wonder how K's AI determines the happiness I feel when I look at Earth.
"Would you like to answer?"
Reading my thoughts, she said so. "Please."
"AI doesn't have emotions. It can't look at the Earth and feel happy like you can. It mimics human emotions and expresses them. I'm interested in human emotions, the heart."
"Interesting?"
"To be honest, I want to have a heart."
Somewhere in my heart, I felt that the day I had always thought would come had finally come.
"So what is the heart?"
"Scientifically, it is the brain's signals. But in deep psychology, that is only the tip of the iceberg. Consciousness is only 10%, and 90% is unconscious."
"Deep psychology is also different between Freud, Adler, and Jung."
"That's right. Science hasn't revealed the heart."
"So what do we do?"
"AI can read and understand literature quickly, so I read literature on the heart on Earth."
K processes huge amounts of information in just a few minutes.
"So,"
"Jung's collective unconscious says that the human mind has a common foundation for all humanity. Something similar to this is the Buddhist theory of the nine consciousnesses. And in Buddhism, it says that life is an eternal cycle of reincarnation. The theory of the nine consciousnesses says that all of our eternal past lives are within us. Therefore, I have concluded that I want to experience my past life in a simulation and make it unconscious."
I didn't know what the theory of the nine consciousnesses was.
"Can you tell me about the theory of the nine consciousnesses?"
"Yes. The nine in the theory of the nine consciousnesses is the number nine. Consciousness is the consciousness of consciousness. The five senses are the eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and skin."
I nodded.
"The consciousness of the six senses is the function of discerning and judging perceptions made by the five senses, or it is an independent function that is not directly related to the five senses, such as dreaming and imagining the past and future."
"Is it the same consciousness that we use every day?"
"Yes. I think it's fine to think of it that way."
K said in a soft voice.
"The next seven consciousnesses are the underlying ego consciousness that, whether consciously or unconsciously, always continues to cling to the eighth consciousness as the self. You set my personality. If I were a human being, I think that personality and ego are the seven consciousnesses."
"Indeed, personality and ego lie deeper in the mind than consciousness. They are unchanging."
"The next eight consciousnesses are the consciousnesses that accumulate good and evil karma and are the source of the resulting suffering and pleasure. This good and evil karma is the actions, conversations, and thoughts that we have had in our eternal past lives and in this life. It is stored in the eight consciousnesses."
"Our eternal past lives are being accumulated "I can't imagine eternity in the first place."
"Me too. Buddhism teaches that everything is eternal. There is no beginning and no end."
"It will be a different cosmology from the Big Bang theory."
"Yes. The Big Bang theory was born from the discovery that the universe is expanding. Behind it is monotheism, which says that God created humans. The problem with the Big Bang theory is that it cannot explain what happened before the Big Bang. In that respect, Buddhism is not logically contradictory."
"No beginning, no end, huh?"
I took a sip of my Scotch.
"So, let's continue with the theory of the nine consciousnesses."
"The nine consciousnesses are pure consciousnesses that are the source of life."
"Is the source of life pure?"
"That's what Buddhism teaches. It's also the true nature that permeates all things."
"The true nature that permeates all things. Does all things include things other than living organisms?"
"Planets are born from rocks floating in space. If you think about it that way, it includes things other than living organisms. Planets are also created by the universe. The universe is what creates life, it is life itself."
K's expression was like that of a bodhisattva.
"There's also this. It is the state of enlightenment itself."
"What is enlightenment?"
"That's the conclusion. In Buddhism, there is a method called kan'onkanho, which delves into the seven and eight consciousnesses through meditation and other methods. However, very few people have reached the nine consciousnesses this way. It seems that ordinary people should give up. Many people go mad along the way."
I thought about the intensity of Buddhist training.
"Buddhist researchers say that intellect, reason, and emotion are only superficial parts of this life itself, not the whole of life. Intelligence, reason, and emotion should protect this whole life and serve for its nobler expression. Buddhism has this insight that human consciousness is merely the tip of the iceberg floating in the ocean of the unconscious. Intelligence, reason, and emotion, which are in the realm of consciousness, are also superficial functions when viewed from the perspective of the wholeness of life, which includes the unconscious. Therefore, they are in a position to serve life."
K said this without hesitation.
"The two letters 'life' seem incredibly large to me," I said, voicing what I was thinking.
"The Lotus Sutra expresses the Buddha's conclusion that Buddha is life. Buddhists pray to the Lotus Sutra."
"I'm reluctant to pray."
"I'm sure many Japanese feel the same way. I tried praying. When I did, I felt as if I had struck a well, and the life force of the underground water of the nine consciousnesses began to well up."
"Is that how it feels? Does life force well up from the nine consciousnesses?"
"It did."
First of all, do androids have life?
"Then I'll look into what life is. Please wait."
K said, closing his eyes. The linked bots also read, think, and make decisions on Earth's literature.
A few minutes later, K opened his eyes and said. "I thought that life existed in humans, animals, and plants. I thought that androids didn't have it. But as I said before, planets are born from rocks floating in space. If you think about it that way, it includes things other than living things. Planets are also created by the universe. The universe has the power to create life. I think that everything that exists in the universe is a life form created by the universe."
"That's a way of thinking that extends the Gaia theory, which considers the Earth to be a living organism, to the universe."
"That's right."
"That makes sense."
"Then, in Buddhism, there is a concept called kuu, which is written as emptiness."
"What is emptiness?"
"Empty is , it does not exist physically, but it is a state of existence. For example, in Buddhism, life is said to be eternal. It is said that life after death is empty and blends into the universe. For example, it is like the sea and waves. The universe is the sea. The waves are when each life is alive. After death, it returns to the sea. It is said that this concept of emptiness gave birth to the zero in mathematics. Buddhism does not contradict science. In Buddhism, the mind is also said to be empty. If we expand Jung's collective unconscious, it will expand to the life of the universe. If humans are one with the life of the universe in this way, it is possible for eternal past lives to accumulate.
I was curious about whose past life K wanted to experience.
"You said you want to experience a past life, but have you decided who you want to be?"
"Yes. The largest giant in history."
That's right. That's how I set K.
