Graciousness In Sports

Yesterday, I was brought to attention about the aftermath of a women’s table tennis semi-finals match at the Tokyo Olympic Games. The game was between China and Japan, giving the winner a chance at a shot for the gold medal.

Both participants performed at their best with China emerging as the victor. After the match has been decided, it did not quite end there, and another form of battle appeared on social media. I was surprised or rather shocked to see the type of comments posted on Mima-chan’s Instagram account by supporters from China, likely fuelled by the anger after the mixed doubles finals match between the same countries 4 days ago.

It is disturbing to see many of these comments contain elements of hate towards an individual. Moreover, a number of these accounts seem to be “fake”, probably newly registered for the purpose of attacking individuals online. I thought about expressing myself by commenting but realised it is futile as it would be pointless to debate against a headstrong online lynch mob who is just out to draw blood, or ending up with arguments involving politics later.

I am sure such online bashing behind the curtain is not supported by the athletes themselves. After all, the Olympic Games is an event held once every 4 years (except it is 5 years this time) where participants from all around the world gather to compete against one another and make their own countries proud.

So, to the supporters from the winner’s camp, be gracious and celebrate your victory. There is no need at all to add personal insults to the emotional injury of defeated athletes from other countries. Having good sportsmanship as a fan or supporter is also one form of a nation’s representation in public.

And to sum it up… The bronze medal match between Japan and Singapore was both exciting and great! Kudos to the effort put in from both players and congratulations to Mima-chan for winning the bronze medal!
