alter means you going to change to something.The same meaning word is “change “.You can use both words.

Actually the meaning are little bit different.

Eg.1:I altered my hair color from light brown to dark brown.
I changed my hair color from brown to black.

Eg.2: I altered seat when I was stay in the library.

I changed place from library to park.
