紙 は 神 ？/ Kami means God ？

森の植物から紙が出来るまでを体験して思ったこと。
「これはほんとに、森そのもの・・・」

ここにある植物を、ここにある木を燃やした火で蒸して、剥いで、川へと晒す・・・それを幾度も繰り返す・・

そんな中、私は海外の友人から幾つかの質問を受けました。

"How much is your art linked to spirituality (meditation for example)?"
（あなたのアートはどれくらいスピリチュアリティと関係しているの？）
"Does the most beautiful art have Kami?"
（紙の持つ一番美しいアートは？）
"Where does the Japanese love of nature comes from?"
（日本人の自然愛はどこから来るの？）

そして、気づいたのは言霊のことでした。

日本には言霊という思想があり、音が、その意味をあらわすといわれています。
そういう色々が、私たち日本人の周りには、ごく自然に馴染んであるように思います。
つまり、「紙」は「kami」で、「神」なのですね。。。

和紙は、千年以上の寿命を持ちます。
原料である植物は、１年で枯れてしまうのに。

これってどういうことなのでしょう？

和紙を作ることは、錬金術なのだと思いました。
いくつもある工程のひとつひとつに、そういう種類の祈りが感じられるといったら大袈裟でしょうか？

そう気づいた瞬間がありました。

植物が枯れ果てる寒い冬に、
その植物から永遠の命を持つ紙を梳き出す
限りある命の私たち。

In the cold winter when the plants die. Making  washi with eternal life from the plant. We of limited life.

Having experienced Japanese handmade paper making, a thought came to me.
"Japanese paper is really a forest itself…!"
And just after that, I received some questions from an oversea friend.
"How much is your art linked to spirituality?"
"Does the most beautiful art have Kami?"
"Where does the Japanese love of nature come from?"
Because of these questions, I noticed that……
Both paper and God are represented with the same sound words “kami” in Japanese. Japan has a thought called “kotodama”, which means the soul of language. 
So I thought “paper” is “God”. Paper means God. 
Japanese paper’s life continues for more than 1,000 years. On the other hand, the plant which is a raw material of the paper dies in one year.
What does this mean???
I thought that making Japanese paper was alchemy.
I can feel prayers of such kind in it......
Prayers of us, with limited life time, for eternal lives.
