「あなたは、キリストです。」（マルコ８：２９）
今回は、「あなたは、キリストです。」（マルコ８：２９）からのメッセージです。
これは、ペテロの信仰告白の言葉であり、教会の基礎となる言葉です。まず、その言葉の背景を考えてみます。マルコ８：２７－３８を読んでいただきたい。６章に戻ると、５０００人の給食の後で、弟子たちは湖の上を歩いているイエスを目撃することとなり、彼らの心中の驚きは非常なものであったとある（マルコ６：５１）。７章では、耳が聞こえず、口のきけない人の癒しを弟子たちは目撃する。人々は非常に驚いて、「この方のなさったことは、みなすばらしい。」と言ったと書かれています。８章でも盲人の癒しを弟子たちは目撃することとなる。驚くべき奇跡を目撃した弟子たちに、イエスは、「人々はわたしをだれだと言っていますか。」と尋ねられる（８：２７）。弟子たちは、「バプテスマのヨハネだと言っています。エリヤだと言う人も、また預言者のひとりだと言う人もいます。」と答える。エリヤは旧約聖書の中で登場する最も偉大な預言者の一人で、神が天に引き上げた預言者であり、もう一度戻ってくる預言者と信じられていた方である。
さて、そのような弟子たちとの会話の後で、イエスは、「では、あなたがたは、わたしをだれだと言いますか。」と弟子たちに尋ねる。その時にペテロが答えたのが、「あなたは、キリストです。」との、今日のテーマの言葉です。これは驚くべき信仰の告白だと私は思う。キリストとはメシアのことであり、救い主との意味であるからです。当時のユダヤ人はメシアが力をもってやってきて、ローマの支配から解放してくださる。全能の神であるメシアが来られて、彼らをすべての束縛から解放してくださる。そのような希望をもってメシアを待ち望んでいたようである。そのようなユダヤ人にとって、これは驚くべき信仰の告白である。
しかしながら、キリストは続けて、「人の子は必ず多くの苦しみを受け、・・・捨てられ、殺され、三日の後によみがえらなければならない」と、弟子たちに教え始められる。救い主が苦しまれ、十字架に着き、彼らの罪を背負い、罪の解放を与える、そのことの意味を弟子たちはこれから教えられることとなる。
イエスは、「だれでも、わたしについて来たいと思うなら、自分を捨て、自分の十字架を負い、そしてわたしについて来なさい。」と弟子たちに語りかける。日々十字架を負うとは、キリストを信じることでの苦しみを負って生きることを意味する。後にキリストの十字架と復活を目撃した弟子たちは、文字通り自分の十字架を負って生きることを決断していく。
さて、あなたは、どうだろうか。イエスこそ救い主ですとの信仰を持つ者として、キリストを信じて生きる苦しみや葛藤を背負う決断ができているだろうか。「いのちを救おうと思う者はそれを失い、わたしと福音のためにいのちを失う者はそれを救うのです。」（８：３５）とイエスは語られる。
マタイ１６：１６にも同じような内容が書かれている。しかし、マタイはその後で、「このことをあなたに明らかに示したのは人間ではなく、天にいます私の父です。」とあり、「ではわたしもあなたに言います。あなたはペテロです。わたしはこの岩の上にわたしの教会を建てます。」（マタイ１６：１７，１８）とある。あなたこそキリストですとの信仰の告白に導かれるのは、父なる神であり、聖霊の働きである。そしてその信仰告白の上にイエスのからだである教会が建て上げられることとなる。今私たちは、聖霊の働きを通して、同じ信仰の上に教会が建て上げられていることを目撃している。私たちの教会もこの信仰告白の上に建てられていることに気付き、そのことを感謝したい。
“You are the Messiah.” (Mark 8:29)
Today’s message is from Mark 8:29, “You are the Messiah.” This proclamation of faith was spoken by Peter and it became the foundation the of church. First of all, let’s start with the background of this words. Please read Mark 8:27 to 38. In chapter 6, the disciples of Jesus witnessed him walking on water after he fed 5000 people. They were completely amazed. (Mark 6:51) In chapter 7, they witnessed Jesus healing a deaf and mute man. People were overwhelmed with amazement, and they said “He has done everything well,” (Mark 7:37 ) Going on to chapter 8, they witnessed more healing, Jesus healed a blind man. After witnessing this great miracle, Jesus asked them “Who do people say I am?” (8:27) They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.” Elijah was one of the greatest prophets in the Old Testament, and God lifted him up to heaven, so it was believed that he was going to come back.
After having this conversation with his disciple, Jesus asked them, “But what about you? Who do you say I am?” Then Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.” (8:29), which is the theme of today’s message. I think this is an amazing proclamation of faith because Christ means Messiah, this means a savior. At that time, the Jewish people believed that when Messiah comes, he would set them free from Roman rule. They believed that almighty God, Messiah comes to set people free from any chains. They had been waiting for Messiah with this hope. Therefore, for the Jewish people, it was such a surprising proclamation of faith. However, Christ then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected and that he must be killed and after three days rise again. (Mark 8:31) He taught them a meaning of the death and sufferings of Messiah on the cross on behalf of them, that set people free from sin.
Jesus gave them a challenge, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” Taking up our own cross means living with the sufferings and challenges of believing in Christ. After witnessing Christ’s cross and resurrection, the disciples made a decision to literally take up their cross and follow Him.
How about you? Are you ready to take up your cross and follow Jesus with sufferings and challenges as a believer of Christ? Jesus said “For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.” (Mark 8:35)
In Matthew 16:16 includes the same contents. However, Matthew added “for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church,” (Matthew 16:17-18 ) It is Heavenly Father and the Holy Spirit who lead us to proclaim that Jesus is Messiah. On this proclamation of faith, the church, the body of Christ is built. We are witnessing now that the church is built on this same faith, and it is by the work of the Holy Spirit. As a church, we want to remind us and give thanks to God that we are also built on this confession of faith.
