一般的には、期間が長くなるほど金利は高くなるため、普通イールド・カーブは右上がりのグラフになる。このイールド・カーブの傾きがさらに急（右上がり）になることをスティープになる、スティープ化するという。逆に短期金利と長期金利の差が小さくなる（イールド・カーブの傾きが緩やかになる）ことをフラットになるという。
