【訳文】ペンネーム I am a cat.
When traveling in Japan with people from overseas, what is astonishing for them is the experience on the expressways.
First of all, when you start driving before entering the expressways, a card reader installed in your car speaks to you in Japanese, saying, “I’ve recognized your ETC card.” While some countries have a system similar to the Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system, their devices almost never sound like a human. In Japan, on the other hand, a voice actress speaks from the device, for example, with the voice of Asakura Minami — the heroine of the anime series “Touch.” Upon hearing the voice, the guests are startled, wondering what the machine wants them to do.
During their visit to Japan, they get used to the message because whenever they ride in cars, the device says the same thing. Most of them get to the point where they can repeat the Japanese phrase perfectly: “I’ve recognized your ETC card.”
Also, to their surprise, once you get on the expressways, the tolls add up depending on how far you drive and which routes you take. Although each toll is usually only between 400 and 600 yen, the total fee can be quite expensive, after all.

【今回の方針】
例のごとく『究極の英語ライティング』『メタモルフォーゼ』の2冊を参照し、書かれている方針や表現を参考にした。段落わけは、日本語課題文のわけ方どおりではなく、内容におうじてつないだり、わけたりした。
【訳文提出前に考えたこと】
(1パラ-1文目) 外国人と日本国内を移動していて、 たいへん驚かれるのが高速道路です。
（コメント）驚くのは（案内をしている）日本人ではなく（案内されている）外国人。高速道路そのものに驚くのではなく、高速道路 "に関する経験" に驚くのではないか？

(2パラ-1文目) まず高速道路に乗る前の時点ですが、車が動き出すと「ETCが挿入されました」と車に装備されている機械が喋ります。
（コメント）機械のセリフを直訳すれば "ETC has been inserted." などとなるだろう。しかし、挿入されたのは見ればわかるわけで、直訳では英語として意味をなさないと考えた。機械のセリフが英語ではなく日本語だというのは、明記しておかないと、第4段落の話が意味不明となる。

(3パラ-1文目) ETCカードのような物がある国がないわけではないのですが、読み取り用の機械からいちいち人間の声がでるのはすごくめずらしいです。
（コメント）二重否定「ないわけではない」は、直訳するとまわりくどすぎるので、肯定文で表現。

(3パラ-2文目) 日本だとそれがアニメの声優さんの声になっていて「タッチ」の南ちゃんの声だったりする。
（コメント）「『タッチ』の南ちゃん」には、説明が必要だろう。
→ In Japan, on the other hand, a voice actress speaks from the device, for example, with the voice of Asakura Minami — the heroine of the anime series “Touch.”
(3パラ-3文目) すると外国人はいったいこれは何を命令しているのかということで思いっきりビビってしまいます。
（コメント）「命令している」に、order は強すぎる気がしたので、少々やわらかく表現した。「思いっきりビビって」も、直訳 are scared out of their witsでは強すぎる気がする。
→ Upon hearing the voice, the guests are startled, wondering what the machine wants them to do.
(4パラ-1,2文目) そして日本に滞在している間に外国人は「ETC が挿入されました」というフレーズを完璧に復唱できるようになる。車で移動すると何回も聞くことになるからです。
（コメント）いくらなんでも「外国人全員」が「完璧に復唱」は、ありえないだろう。説明の順番が不自然な気がしたので、自分なりに「旧情報」→「新情報」の流れをつくったつもり。また、ここでも「日本語のフレーズ」であることを明記しないと、メッセージが伝わらない。

(4パラ-3文目) そして高速道路に入ると驚くべきことに細かく料金が加算されていく。
（コメント）驚くのは筆者ではなく外国人であることを明記。「細かく」がうまく表現できなかったので無視。一方で「走行距離と経路により」を付け加えた。
→ Also, to their surprise, once you get on the expressways, the tolls add up depending on how far you drive and which routes you take.
(4パラ-4文目) 1回の料金は400円とか600円ですが、積み重なっていくと決して安い料金ではありません。
（コメント）「400円とか600円」の「とか」の表現法に悩んだ結果、「たったの400円と600円のあいだ」とした。最後に after all を加えて、「結局、最終的には」と表現したつもり。
→ Although each toll is usually only between 400 and 600 yen, the total fee can be quite expensive, after all.
