Bread boom in japan
Japan is undergoing a “bread boom”.
Firstly, bread was said to have entered Japan from Portugal during the Warring States period(1467〜1615) with guns and began to spread among the common people during the Meiji period(1868~1912).
After World War II, the United States brought in flour as a relief supply, and bread was selected as school lunches, then the bread food culture spread in Japan. Today, bread is a popular item in the Japanese diet, especially for breakfast.
Bread has been loved for many years, but the factor that has driven such a big boom is "luxury".
High-end products that are easily available anytime, anywhere, tend to be loved by the public. Usually, we can buy bread for 100 to 200 yen per loaf. But in this boom, bread is sold for around 1000 yen for 2 loaves. It's more than double the normal price. So it feels expensive, but it's not an exorbitant price. this “Upgrading within reach” image is the key to the boom.
It was the distribution industry that drove the high-end bread boom. In April 2013, Seven-Eleven Japan started selling "golden bread". At that time, golden bread was 250 yen. Despite being 2.5 times the normal price, it was well-received, and as a result, sales of Seven-Eleven bread increased 1.6 times from the previous year. This is the food industry such as supermarkets, high-quality bread was sold one after another and it became a hot selling product.
Next, a specialty store appeared. Their pioneer high-end brand "Nogami" opened its first store in Osaka, 2013.
Nogami's bread is soft and slightly sweet, even though it doesn't use any eggs. It has a mochi-like texture that is sticky, and so soft.
Nogami has reached all 47 prefectures nationwide and opened 173 stores in 6 years and 8 months.
Following their success, the number of high-end bread brands has increased and is evergrowing present in all major cities. These stores are also focusing on interior, packaging, and branding as a luxury brand.
As a result, it has been selected as a gift not only for eating by oneself but also for giving to others.
