Academic conferences

I have been participating in the academic meeting at Nagoya in Japan. The number of English presentations (sessions) are increasing. I can understand its contents even if the sessions are presented in English if those sessions are in my expertized field. So, whether we can understand its contents are depended on the knowledge/profession to the theme rather than the level of English.

I have noted some significant difference in the presentation between Japanese and non-Japanese speakers. Behavior during speaking is fairy different. Non-Japanese speakers have eye contact with participants and use effective jestures (moving hands and/or arms). I think non-Japanese speakers have been trained how to speak and how to tell their stories to participants effectivelly.

昨日から国内の学会に参加している。最近の学会は英語での発表が増えている。僕が専門にしている領域であれば、たとえ英語であっても中身は理解できる。つまり、中身を理解できるか否かの分かれ目は英語のレベルというよりは、discussionしている内容に対する専門知識のレベルなのだろう。

日本人と海外の発表で大きな違いがある。発表中の振る舞いに違いがある。海外の演者は参加者とアイコンタクトを取り、効果的なジェスチャーを使う。たぶん、海外の人は聴衆に効果的に伝えるための訓練を受けているのだろう。
