Should job promotions be based on performance or on seniority?
I believe that job promotions should be based on performance for the following reasons.
Firstly, Japan is facing a super-aging society, and many companies still adopt a seniority-based promotion system. However, if companies continue with this approach, seniors would simply wait in line to get promoted, and young people would rarely get the chance. This situation could discourage young individuals from working hard and negatively affect the company’s productivity and efficiency.
Secondly, while elderly people have knowledge based on their experiences, younger generations are generally more familiar with cutting-edge technologies. Both types of expertise should be combined to innovate and improve companies, leading to increased profits.
In conclusion, to pursue efficiency and productivity, individuals who excel should be promoted regardless of their age.
