1. H2's Mission
Did you know that construction is the world’s largest industry, accounting for about 13% of global GDP? As populations grow and living standards rise, the demand for new infrastructure and the replacement of outdated systems increases. Construction drives this growth and helps create a more equitable future.
However, in many developed countries, the demand for construction labor far exceeds supply. Materials are increasingly scarce and expensive. In Japan, preparations for the 2020 Olympics required significant infrastructure upgrades, and many buildings and large areas are now slated for reconstruction. With such high demand, project delays have become the norm, budget overruns are passed on to consumers—such as new home buyers—and costly, even deadly, mistakes are rising.
What will the world look like in 20 years if infrastructure isn’t properly replaced, or if old buildings remain standing because the industry can no longer meet demand?
Over the past decade, Japan’s construction industry has made significant strides toward digital transformation. Starting with the major contractors, many companies have digitized workflows and automated processes. However, most IT and SaaS solutions available today are still first-generation, and while they help digitize workflows, meaningful productivity gains remain elusive. This reminds me of the EHR/EMR adoption wave in healthcare 10-15 years ago: Hospitals expected productivity improvements, only to hear from doctors and nurses that the opposite was true. Similarly, construction companies are realizing that early digital solutions haven’t led to substantial efficiency gains.
2. H2's Vision
At H2, we believe in augmenting human workers to help construction companies achieve massive productivity and quality improvements—think of it as a "Copilot for Construction." Our goal is to leverage neural network-based legacy AIs, multi-modal AI, transformer-based generative AI, and vast domain data to develop the next generation of human-centric AI solutions. These solutions aim to boost productivity by 10X and ensure construction remains safe for workers and reliable for consumers.
Our flagship product, AISekisan, is a human-AI hybrid solution that automates material takeoffs and project estimation. Material takeoffs and estimates are often a bottleneck in construction projects, but we improve this process by up to 25X while maintaining high accuracy.
3. H2's Strengths
Our greatest strength lies in our product team. Our global team has extensive experience, not just in researching cutting-edge technologies like LLMs and CNNs, but in delivering products to millions of customers. While many companies have talented engineers, few have engineers with a proven track record of shipping successful products.
Creating a truly global product requires deep cultural understanding. While supporting multiple languages is straightforward, adapting software to fit different cultural norms, customs, and workflows is much more challenging. We have domain experts and members with deep UX expertise that help drive a global but locally palatable product.
We also have partnerships with some of Japan’s largest construction players, including top general contractors, subcontractors, and trading companies. These partnerships provide two key benefits: (1) a macro perspective on industry trends, challenges, and opportunities, and (2) direct access to end users. This proximity enables us to build products that truly meet user needs, not just ones that sound innovative. Our team regularly engages with users, whether through phone calls or site visits, ensuring we get real-time feedback that shapes our solutions.
