(Radu Lupu | 1990 | Live) Liszt: Piano Sonata in B minor, S.178

Some change of plans here in order to meet a request: Radu Lupu's Liszt Sonata. This is unusual and unexpected repertoire from Lupu for sure, who otherwise typically made his home in Germanic classical and romantic repertoire, and who practically never touched anything which might be confused with virtuosity. Yet nonetheless one which makes you wish he had taken up more Liszt. Aside from Lupu's customary openness and narrative driven style in performance it has a vision and imagination to it which is entirely his own, and as with any great Lupu performance you get the impression he makes it all up on the spot (which, having heard him several times only days apart, I can confirm is precisely what he often did). Above all it's an entirely musical look at the Sonata, where the instrument itself plays no role, and where the writing has become an integral part of the musical fabric - an approach which remains as rare as it is illuminating in Liszt.

To the best of my knowledge there are only two recorded performances of Lupu playing the work, both made from the audience. Choosing between them is a matter of deciding between one where his ideas are most clearly presented, and where they're arguably most successfully put to use. My choice here fell on the latter - with the caveat that it is also the worse sounding recording of the two. Still, this was done by one of the better tapers of the cassette era, and it bugs me to this day that I've never been able to track him down. If you happen to be you, as it were, I'd love to hear from you below (we've had at least one mutual friend in Gurnee, Illinois, if you recall from more than two decades ago, but at the time he declined to reveal your identity - even if he kindly did send me several of your tapes for transfer).
