A great tool for movie watchers!

Watching movies in English has always been one of the best tools to learn it. Getting to hear native speakers exchange throughout daily conversations about various topics (comedy, romance, action, etc.) is not only good for comprehension, but also to grasp the more difficult nuances of the language. I highly advise you to start watching movies in their original language, with subtitles at first. This way, the brain makes the link between what’s said and what’s written, associating the words and their sound in your mind for virtually eternity!

It can be frustrating at times to read about a word you don’t know, though. You need to pause the movie, open the dictionary or a new tab on your computer, look the word up and understand it in its context. This breaks the rhythm and make for a generally unpleasant time. Pick a heavy dialogue-based movie and your nice, hour and a half experience turns to a multiple hour online-checking session.

There’s a great tool to make up for this issue: WordsAvenue. Most movie subtitles are encoded in a small file with the “.srt” extension. You just need to upload the .srt file on WordsAvenue and select your English level from 1-100. For beginners, 20 or 30 should be enough. Think 60 for intermediate and 80 for advanced. The website then automatically picks the words that are most difficult in the dialogues and shows you the result! This way, you can double check the meaning before watching and enjoy an easier time and a much pleasant experience.
