王様;　よくぞ来た！勇敢なるオルテガの子　〇〇〇よ！

兵士A;　We could not locate any of Ortega's belongings
兵士A　オルテガ殿のご遺品はまったく見つけられませんでした。
King;  I see… To think something out there is capable of besting a man of his calibre…
王様;　そうか…。しかしオルテガほどの者がやられるとは…。
Mum;  My husband thought long and hard before setting off. I'm sure he was at peace when he passed.  
母　…夫はりっぱに戦いました。きっと本望だと思います。
(直訳: 私の夫は旅立つ前にじっくりと考えました。彼は亡くなるとき、きっと安らかだったと思います。)

King;  Doubtless, your mother has recounted the tale of your father's final moments many times.

Go and consult with mistress Patty in town. And use this to outfit the companions she has selected for you.

chancellor;  Allow me to proffer some guidance: you would be wise to seek out the thief's key, an implement that can open a myriad of the world's doors; obtain it and your travels will be that bit easier.

Once you have done so, try making your way to Reeve, a quaint village to the north-west of our fair kingdom.
You will now find Reeve marked on your map. Locating the rest of the realm's noteworthy areas, however, is a task I believe best left in your capable hands.
You simply need note down anywhere you happen to visit. Be sure to see these place with your own eyes first, though, otherwise you'll likely forget to mark them on your map.
And remember: your curiosity an asset most valuable. Lend it an ear at all times and you will surely benefit. However, remain wary, lest it lead you into trouble on occasion…

地図にレーベの場所を記しておきました。今回は特別ですぞ。
本来は自分の足で城や村を見つけなければ印は付きませんのでご注意を
地図上で気になる場所を見つけたら実際に行って確かめてみることです。
ただし魔物にはお気をつけて。
(直訳: それを済ませたら、リーヴという風情のある村へ向かうとよいでしょう。我が王国の北西にあります。
リーヴはすでに地図に記されました。しかし、王国の他の重要な場所を見つけるのは、あなたの有能な手に委ねるのが最適だと私は思います。
訪れた場所は、ただ書き留めておけばよいのです。ただし、必ず自分の目で確かめてからにしなさい。さもないと、地図に記すのを忘れてしまうかもしれませんよ。そして覚えておきなさい。あなたの好奇心は、最も価値のある財産です。常に耳を傾ければ、きっと大きな利益を得るでしょう。

日常的によく使われたり覚えておいたほうが良い英語表現と解説

1. "Well met"

   • 意味: 「よくぞ来た」「ようこそ」

   • 解説: 古風な英語表現で、ファンタジー作品や中世風の話でよく使われる。日常会話ではほぼ使われないが、ゲームや小説を読むときに知っておくと理解しやすい。

2. "To think something out there is capable of besting a man of his calibre…"

   • 意味: 「彼ほどの力量の持ち主を打ち負かすものがいるとは…」

   • 解説:

     • "To think" → 「～とは驚きだ」「～なんて考えられない」

     • "besting" → 「打ち負かす」「勝る」(best を動詞として使う)

     • "calibre" → 「能力」「力量」

3. "He must be stopped - no matter the cost!"

   • 意味: 「どんな犠牲を払っても彼を止めねばならない！」

   • 解説: "no matter the cost" は「どんな犠牲を払っても」という意味で、強い決意を表す。日常会話では "no matter what"（何があっても）もよく使う。

4. "You simply need note down anywhere you happen to visit."

   • 意味: 「訪れた場所を記録しておくだけでよい。」

   • 解説:

     • "note down" → 「書き留める」「メモする」

     • "happen to visit" → 「たまたま訪れる」
       → 日常会話でも "I’ll note that down."（それを書き留めておくよ） のように使える。

5. "Your curiosity an asset most valuable."

   • 意味: 「君の好奇心こそが最も価値のある財産だ。」

   • 解説:

     • "an asset" は「財産」「有益なもの」

     • "most valuable" は「最も価値のある」
       → 文法的には "Your curiosity is an asset most valuable." が正しいが、詩的な表現として「is」が省略されている。

6. "Remain wary, lest it lead you into trouble on occasion…"

   • 意味: 「常に警戒せよ、さもなくば時としてそれ（好奇心）が災いをもたらすかもしれない…」

   • 解説:

     • "Remain wary" → 「警戒を怠るな」

     • "lest ～" → 「～しないように」（古風な表現）

     • "on occasion" → 「時折」
       → 日常では「Be careful not to get into trouble.（トラブルに巻き込まれないように気をつけて）」のように言い換え可能。

7. "We expect great things of you!"

   • 意味: 「君には大いに期待しているぞ！」

   • 解説:

     • "expect great things of 人" → 「～に大きな期待を寄せる」
       → 親や先生が子どもに「期待してるよ！」と言うときに使える表現。

8. I'm sure he was at peace when he passed.  "passed" は "passed away"（亡くなった）の省略形として、英語では比較的よく使われる表現です。特に口語や書き言葉で、"died" よりも柔らかく丁寧なニュアンスを持ちます。

"passed" の使われ方

1. "He passed last night."
   → 「彼は昨夜亡くなりました。」

2. "I'm sorry to hear that your grandfather passed."
   → 「おじい様が亡くなられたと聞いて、お悔やみ申し上げます。」

よりフォーマルな場面や、丁寧に言いたい場合は "passed away" のほうが一般的です。
日常会話やカジュアルな文脈では、"passed" だけでも意味が通じることが多いです。

私が難しいと感じた英語表現

(訳:というのも、それこそが彼の望んでいたことだからです。そして、彼のような英雄の子であるあなただけが、我々の世界を救う希望となるのです。)
この文は、運命的な使命感 を強調しており、特にファンタジー作品などでよく見られる表現らしいです。

解説

① "For it is what he would have wanted."

• "For" → 「というのも」「なぜなら」（理由を示す接続詞）

• "it is what he would have wanted"

  • "what he would have wanted" → 「彼が望んでいたであろうこと」

  • "would have wanted" は仮定法過去完了で、「もし彼が生きていたら、きっと望んでいた」というニュアンスを持つ。

  • 直訳すると「それは、彼が望んでいたであろうことだからです。」

② "And only the child of such a hero as he could hope to save our world."

• "only" → 「唯一」

• "the child of such a hero as he"

  • "such a hero as he" → 「彼のような英雄」

  • 「彼のような英雄の子供だけが」という意味。

• "could hope to save our world"

  • "hope to ~" → 「～する希望を持つ」

  • "could" は仮定的な意味合いを持ち、「～できる可能性がある」

  • 「世界を救う希望を持つことができる（＝世界を救うことができる）」

権威ある王様や大臣の使う英語表現は難しいですね…（笑）
