畳

お茶に関わる文化や道具などは中国伝来のものが多い中、畳は日本固有の敷物です。その歴史は古事記(7世紀頃)にまで遡ります。元々は高貴な身分の人や客人のおもてなしのためのものでしたが、数奇屋造や茶道が発展・普及した桃山〜江戸時代に徐々に町人の家にも畳が敷かれるようになったそうです。
 
それでも身分による畳の制限の風習は残り、庶民が使用できるようになったのは江戸時代中期以降と言われています。
 
Though most of the cultures and facilities for tea are from China, ‘Tatami’, the straw floor mat, originated from Japan. It comes from the 7th century. It was used for nobles and guests, it was getting used for common people in the 17th century.
 
These days, European-styled-houses are common; we cannot see Tatami in common houses.
