帰国子女の私が思う、のれんの英語から発展できる、外国の人との会話

店の入り口にかざる、のれん。

私はこの日本語が大好きだ。

英語では、shop curtain。（ショップ・カーテン）

はい、そんなチープな英語はおかしい、と私も思う。

海外にはないから、しょーがない。

「英語で語る日本事情」にある、「のれん」の説明：

"Noren is a slit curtain that is hung in the doorway of a restaurant when it is open.
If the noren is tucked inside the door, the establishment is not open for business."

＜訳＞
のれんとは、料理店が営業中に入口にかける、切れ目が入ったカーテンのこと。のれんが入口の内側にしまってあれば、その店は準備中。

例えば、こんな感じ？

Noren is like a signboard for the restaurant, indicating what kind of food it provides and who cooks the food.
Noren is also used to mean "goodwill" which is an accounting word meaning  the premium paid to purchase a company.
The reason why it is used in accounting is because Japanese people believe that the firms pay premium to buy other firms, because they carry a good brand or "signboard" which they believe bring long-term earnings.

＜訳＞
のれんは、そのレストランにとって看板のようなもの。どんな食事を提供して、どんなシェフが食事を料理するかを示すものなのだ。
「のれん」は、会計用語の「のれん」（企業を買収するときに支払われるプレミアムという意味）にも使われる。
こんな会計用語で使われる理由は、企業が他の会社を買収するとき、その会社がもっている「看板」（＝のれん）が長期的な収益をもたらすと信じてプレミアムを支払うからだ。

外国の人は、歴史や文化の違いで「××だからこう呼んでいる」「××という意味もある」という説明が大好き。
