The Incident at Honnō-ji:June 6th(Tuesday)
Until Honnō-ji was relocated to Nakagyo-ku Shimohonnōjimae-chō under Toyotomi Hideyoshi's orders in 1591, it is believed that the temple was located around the present-day Shimogyo-ku Aburanokojidōri-Takatsuji and Nishinotoin area. Coincidentally, I currently happen to live around Aburanokojidōri-Takatsuji. On June 21st, 1582, a military force led by Akechi Mitsuhide attacked Honnō-ji, resulting in the infamous Incident at Honnō-ji. It is said that the temple was set on fire and burned down, and Oda Nobunaga committed seppuku. The current site of Honnō-ji is occupied by the offices of the fire brigade and other buildings. In the character "能" of Honnō-ji, there are two strokes of the radical "hi" (fire) on the right side. Due to its aversion to fire, the right side is traditionally written without the radical "hi" in kanji characters.
