大学入学式での祝辞：2023年4月15日（土）
大学入学式で興味があるのが著名人による祝辞である。昨年度の早稲田大学政治経済学部・法学部の入学式の株式会社ファーストリテーリング代表取締役会長兼社長の柳井正氏の祝辞は圧巻の祝辞の一つではなかろうか。
山口県宇部市の一つの小さな商店から今や世界のユニクロへと50年ほどで成長させた柳井氏であっても，在野精神と消費者本位の経営を今でも強調した祝辞の内容であった。柳井氏が大学に在学していた当時は日米安保問題で学生運動によって，大学ではまともな大学授業が行われる環境ではなかった。その半面，自分のやりたいことを自ら考えてやる，そして，その結果に対する責任は自分が取るという早稲田大学の「学の独立と自由」がとても好きだったと柳井氏は述べられていた。
翻って，今や充実した大学教育の設備環境に加えて，これでもかと言わんばかりの詳細なカリキュラムが用意された大学であるが，学生にとっての「やらされ感」というのは既成の教育内容を修得しなければならないというキャッチアップを要請することに起因している。
学生の目の前には「自分がやりたいことをせよ」という思考時間にふける前に、「やらないといけないことがある」という切迫感のほうが強いだろう。
つまり，「自分がやりたいこと」ができるように，大学に入る前に真面目に勉強しておけば良いだけの話である。今はそのような時代なのである。
Commemorative Address at University Entrance Ceremony：April 15th(Saturday)
One of the highlights of a university entrance ceremony is the congratulatory address by a celebrity. Mr. Tadashi Yanai, Chairman and President of Fast Retailing Co., Ltd., who delivered a memorable congratulatory address at last year's entrance ceremony for the Faculty of Political Science and Economics and the Faculty of Law at Waseda University, is perhaps one of them.
Even Mr. Yanai, who has grown Uniqlo from a small shop in Ube City, Yamaguchi Prefecture to a global brand in about 50 years, emphasized the spirit of being in the opposition and customer-centric management in his congratulatory address. When Mr. Yanai was a student at university, the environment for proper university classes was not conducive due to student movements related to the Japan-US Security Treaty issue. On the other hand, Mr. Yanai stated that he loved Waseda University's motto of "independence and freedom in learning," which encouraged students to think for themselves and take responsibility for the results of their actions.
On the contrary, nowadays universities are equipped with facilities and curriculum details that are so comprehensive that students feel overwhelmed by the sense of being "forced" to catch up with established educational content.
In front of students, the sense of urgency that "there are things that must be done" before indulging in thinking about "what they want to do" is stronger. In other words, it is simply a matter of studying diligently before entering university in order to be able to do "what they want to do." Such is the era we live in now.
