The Aoi Festival Procession after 4 Years:May 16th(Tuesday)
The street procession of the Kamo Festival (Aoi Festival), which had been postponed yesterday due to rain, took place today. It has been 4 years since the last procession, as it had been canceled for three consecutive years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since I had lectures yesterday, I had given up on the possibility of seeing it directly this year. However, fortunately (apologies to those who had planned to see it yesterday), I was able to see it directly today on Kamogawa Street (photo). Today's highest temperature in Kyoto City was 28°C, resembling the heat of midsummer. Departing from the Kyoto Imperial Palace at 10:30 AM, I saw people wearing Heian-period costumes in the procession heading towards Kamigamo Shrine, passing through Shimogamo Shrine, and it was evident that they were somewhat fatigued. The streets were bustling with local residents and tourists from both domestic and international locations.
