常に未来を‼：2023年4月13日（木）

私は高校卒業後，駿台予備学校で１年間浪人して受験勉強した後に，1981年に大学に入学した。下の写真は，『大学への日本史』（研文書院）の著者である安藤達朗先生から，同書の扉（とびら）に頂戴した直筆サインの「常に未来を‼」である。早稲田大学の入学試験の約１週間前のことであったが，駿台予備学校の安藤達朗先生による「日本史」の最終講義終了後に，安藤先生にお願いして，持参した同書に教室でサインをペンで書いてもらったものである。安藤先生の講義は，歴史の史実を先生の言葉（先生は吃音であったが）で丁寧に解説をいただき，それまでに経験したことがなかったような歴史勉強の姿勢を体感し，感動した記憶がある。

　サインを頂戴した当時は，この「常に未来を‼」という言葉の意味する真意について深く考えることはなかった。日本史という歴史を教えておられる先生なのに，過去ではなく，「常に未来を‼」と書かれたことに対して変な違和感を覚えた程度のことしか感じていなかったように思う。

　安藤先生は1935年に台湾で生まれ，第二次世界大戦後に鹿児島に引き揚げられ，その後，東京大学文学部国史学科卒業，同大学院比較文学比較文化専攻課程を修了された。2002年に逝去された。駿台予備学校の日本史の授業ではいつも教室では立ち見が出るほどの人気講師であった。私も歳を取るにつれて，安藤先生がサインとして書いてくださった「常に未来を‼」の意味することの深さをあらためて考えるようになった。

Always Embrace the Future!：April 13th(Thursday)

After graduating from high school, I spent a year studying for university entrance exams as a ronin at the Sundai Preparatory School. In 1981, I entered university. The photo below is a handwritten autograph I received from Lecturer Tatsuro Ando, the author of "Daigaku e no Nihonshi" (Kenbun Shoin), which is the front cover of the book. It was taken a week before the entrance exam for Waseda University, after the final lecture on Japanese history by Lecturer Ando at the Sundai Preparatory School. I asked Lecturer Ando to sign it for me with a pen in the classroom. I have memories of being deeply moved by Lecturer Ando's lectures, in which he explained the historical facts in his own words (despite his stuttering) with great care, and experiencing a learning attitude towards history that I had never felt before.

At the time when I received the autograph, I did not deeply consider the true meaning behind the words "Always Embrace the Future!" I only felt a strange sense of discomfort that a teacher who taught Japanese history, which is about the past, wrote "Always Embrace the Future!" Instead. Lecturer Ando was born in Taiwan in 1935 and returned to Kagoshima after World War II. He graduated from the Department of History at the University of Tokyo's Faculty of Literature, and completed the Comparative Literature and Comparative Culture program at the graduate school of the same university. He passed away in 2002. He was a popular lecturer at the Sundai Preparatory School, often filling the classroom to standing room only for his Japanese history classes. As I grew older, I began to reconsider the depth of the meaning behind "Always Embrace the Future!" that Lecturer Ando wrote as an autograph.
