　日本では，本日は「みどりの日」で国民の祝日であり，今年は土曜日と重なり，ゴールデンウィークの後半が昨日から始まった。京都市の最高気温は29℃と夏のような暑さだが，湿度が40％台で，からっとした五月晴れとなり，桜の時季から新緑の季節に入ってきた。

　京都産業大学キャンパスのある京都市北区では，5月と言えば，何といっても，5月15日（水）の葵祭（賀茂祭）である。昨日3日には，葵祭の行列巡行である「路頭の儀」の道中安全（下鴨神社（賀茂御祖神社）から上賀茂神社（賀茂別雷神社）までの行列巡行）を祈る神事として，下鴨神社の糺（ただす）の森で流鏑馬の神事が行われた。約3万人が訪れたという。

　本日は，5月15日の葵祭に奉仕される「斎王代」以下女人列の御禊を行う「斎王代御禊の儀」が上賀茂神社で執り行われ，今日から15日まで，ひたすら葵祭の無事を祈願する日々を過ごされるということだ。斎王代は1956（昭和31）年に創設された斎王の代理であり，今年で第66代目である。毎年，京都の由緒あるお家から選出され，今年は壬生寺（京都市中京区）の貫主のご長女の松浦さんが選ばれた。祭りの無事を願うとともに，とても楽しみである。授業と重なり，直接，「路頭の儀」を観ることができない年が多いが，今年は水曜日ということであり，上賀茂神社に到着する頃に，観に行くことができそうだ。

Greenery Day：May 4th(Saturday)

Today in Japan is "Greenery Day," a national holiday, and it coincides with Saturday this year, marking the beginning of the latter half of Golden Week since yesterday. In Kyoto City, the highest temperature reached 29°C, feeling like summer, yet the humidity stayed around 40%, creating a dry and clear May weather, transitioning from the cherry blossom season to the season of fresh greenery.

In the northern district of Kyoto City where Kyoto Sangyo University campus is located, May is especially known for the Aoi Matsuri (Kamo Festival) held on May 15th (Wednesday). Yesterday, on the 3rd, a ritual of yabusame (horseback archery) took place at the Shimogamo Shrine's Tadasu no Mori forest to pray for the safety of the Aoi Matsuri procession route, which stretches from Shimogamo Shrine (Kamo Mioya Shrine) to Kamigamo Shrine (Kamo Wakeikazuchi Shrine). It's reported that around 30,000 people attended.

Today, at Kamigamo Shrine, the "Saio Dai Gyokei no Gi" ritual, cleansing the Saio Dai and female attendants who will serve in the Aoi Matsuri on May 15th, will be held. From today until the 15th, they will spend their days earnestly praying for the safe conduct of the Aoi Matsuri. The Saio Dai represents the Saio, a tradition established in 1956 (Showa 31), and this year marks the 66th generation. Selected annually from prestigious Kyoto families, this year, Ms. Matsuura, the eldest daughter of the head priest of Mibu-dera Temple (Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto City), has been chosen. We wish for the festival's success and eagerly await it. In many years, due to class schedules, it's not possible to directly witness the "route procession," but this year being on a Wednesday, it seems likely that I'll be able to go and watch by the time they arrive at Kamigamo Shrine.
