赤髪組合：2025年1月29日（水）

私は1981年に大学に入学した当時，推理小説に興味があり，なかでもコナン・ドイルの「シャーロック・ホームズ」シリーズに夢中になっていた時期があった。私は設立されて間もない日本シャーロック・ホームズ・クラブ（1977年設立）にも入会していた。当時は，毎月1回，同クラブから茶色の長形3号の封筒に入った四つ折りの手書きの「ベイカー街通信」が郵送されてくるのを楽しみに待っていた。

　コナン・ドイル著『シャーロック・ホームズの冒険』（延原謙訳，新潮文庫）の中には，実に突飛な話である「赤髪（あかげ）組合」が収められている。その後の私の人生においても「まさしく，これは「赤髪組合」のストーリーと同じだ」と思うような出来事をたくさん経験してきた。「無意味だが，後から振り返ってみると，実は別の意味があった」「仕組まれた罠」とも表現されるような出来事である。

　年明け後，歳をとった所為か，右眼でみる景色が二重三重に見えるようになった。京都市堀川北山交差点の近くにある眼科で検査してもらうと，両眼が緑内障予備軍に入っていて，右眼が白内障だという。さらに，近視の度数が高くて，右眼と左眼の視力が違っているので，いま着用している眼鏡からコンタクトレンズに変更にするようにと推奨された。理由は分からないが，白内障手術には（左眼の）コンタクトレンズの装着が必要だと言う。

　初診日は緑内障の悪化を防ぐために眼圧を下げるミケランLA点眼液2%を処方された。毎晩点眼するのだが，1ヵ月半ほどの量の点眼液を受け取った。「白内障手術は急ぐ必要はないので，手術を希望する2ヵ月前に相談しましょう」ということになった。これで5千円超の診察代・薬代が掛かった。

　それから一週間後，白内障手術を3月頃にお願いするために医院で診察してもらった。すると，花粉症の季節だから5月以降に手術したらどうかと言う。それも，京都市中京区円町にある病院に京都府立医科大学（医院長の出身大学だという）の医師が出向くので，そこで手術を受けて欲しいと言う。京都府立医科大学では，手術の予約が一杯で1年ほど待たないと受けれないと言う。この会話の真意をどのように解釈すれば良いか分からないが，決して気分の良いものではないことは確かだ。

　さらに，白内障手術には，手術をしない左眼にコンタクトレンズを装着することを推奨された。これも意味が分からない。割安だという理由から，ハードコンタクトレンズではなく，ソフトコンタクトレンズを勧められた。私にとっては43年ぶりのソフトコンタクトレンズの装着だ。ソフトコンタクトレンズは外す際が大変だ。慣れないと苦労する。この日は，装着して外すのに手こずり，このために眼が充血して，大したことはないが眼に傷がついたと言う。そこで「眼にできた傷の治療のためのヒアルロン酸Na点眼液0.1％が処方された挙句に，ソフトコンタクトレンズは，装着して外すのが上手にできないのであれば購入できない」と言う。

　こうして本日は，この眼科医院で2時間を費やした挙句に，白内障手術の予約は詰まるところ未定のまま，レンズを外せる能力がないとしてソフトコンタクトレンズは支給されず，レンズ着用の試行の際に左眼にできた傷の治療点眼液を処方され，約1,700円の診察代・薬代のみが請求されることになった。

　これは，まるで逆バージョンの「赤髪組合」にほかならない。言い換えると，ぼったくりだ。

When I entered university in 1981, I was deeply interested in mystery novels, particularly Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes series. At the time, I even joined the Japan Sherlock Holmes Club, which had been established just a few years earlier in 1977. I looked forward each month to receiving the club’s handwritten newsletter, The Baker Street Journal, which came folded neatly inside a brown No. 3 envelope.

One of the most outlandish stories included in Conan Doyle’s The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (translated by Ken Nobuhara, Shinchosha Bunko) is The Red-Headed League. Even in my later life, I have encountered numerous situations that made me think, This is exactly like the story of The Red-Headed League.” These are events that might seem meaningless at first but, upon reflection, reveal hidden significance or turn out to be traps deliberately set-just as the story portrays.

Since the start of the new year, perhaps because of aging, I’ve noticed that my vision in my right eye has become blurry, with objects appearing doubled or tripled. When I went to an ophthalmologist near the Horikawa-Kitayama intersection, Kyoto City, tests revealed that both my eyes are in the early stages of glaucoma, and my right eye has cataracts. Additionally, due to severe myopia and a significant difference in vision between my eyes, it was recommended that I switch from glasses to contact lenses. Apparently, contact lenses for my left eye are necessary for the cataract surgery.

During the first visit, I was prescribed Mikelan LA 2% Eye Drops to lower eye pressure and prevent glaucoma from worsening. I was given enough medication for about a month and a half and instructed to use it nightly. I was also told that cataract surgery wasn’t urgent, and I should consult with them about two months prior to when I’d like the surgery. The initial consultation and medication cost over 5,000 yen.

A week later, I returned to schedule the surgery for March. However, I was advised to wait until after the pollen allergy season and consider surgery in May or later. Furthermore, they suggested I undergo surgery at a hospital in Enmachi, Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto City, where doctors from Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine (the alma mater of the clinic’s head doctor) perform surgeries. They mentioned that the university hospital itself is so booked that it would take about a year to get an appointment. While I couldn’t fully grasp the intent behind this conversation, it was certainly not a pleasant experience.

On top of that, I was encouraged to wear contact lenses for my non-surgical left eye. For reasons of cost-effectiveness, soft contact lenses were recommended instead of hard ones. This marked my first use of soft contact lenses in 43 years. However, removing them proved challenging, and I struggled significantly. Because of this, my eyes became red, and I was told I had sustained minor scratches. To treat these, I was prescribed Hyaluronic Acid Sodium Eye Drops 0.1%. Moreover, I was told that unless I could demonstrate proficiency in removing the lenses, I wouldn’t be allowed to purchase them.

Today, after spending two hours at this ophthalmology clinic, I ended up with no confirmed cataract surgery appointment, was deemed unfit to receive soft contact lenses due to my inability to remove them, and was prescribed eye drops to treat the scratch on my left eye caused during the lens trial. For all this, I was charged approximately 1,700 yen for the consultation and medication.

This is nothing less than a reverse version of The Red-Headed League. In other words, it feels like a scam.
