担任教員の河合先生：2023年5月25日（木）

1977年，高校１年次のクラス担任の河合先生には大変お世話になった。体育の教師で，生徒をファーストネームで呼ぶタイプの先生だった。話すときに言葉をよく選んで，控えめに，生徒のことを考えて話す印象が今も記憶に残っている。私たちが卒業後，しばらくして，残念ながら，若い年齢で逝去されてしまった。

　高校１年次の入学後まもなくして，担任教員と生徒の間での個別面談があり，次のような会話を持った覚えがある。

「秀昭は集中力がありそうだから，その能力を伸ばすためにも，弓道部に入ったらどうだ。」

「遠距離通学（豊橋鉄道渥美線と名鉄の電車を利用しての通学）で片道１時間ほど掛かるので，部活動は難しいです。」

「そうか。それでは勉強に専念するか。そうだな，秀昭は京都大学を目指せ。なんとなく向いていそうだ。」

「‥‥。」

　なぜ，そのときに，河合先生が京都大学を目指せと言ったのかはよく分からないが，最終的に，京都大学で学位を取得することができた。

　良き指導とは，「べらべらと口数を並べて言い立てる」のではなく，相手の真に迷っている心情を理解してあげることから出発して，必要にして十分な言葉で導くことなのだろう，とそのときの河合先生と共有した時間を振り返り，近頃は思っている。

Mr. Kawai, my homeroom teacher：May 25th(Thursday)

In 1977, I was greatly indebted to Mr. Kawai, my homeroom teacher during my first year of high school. He was a physical education teacher who addressed students by their first names. He had a way of carefully choosing his words and speaking modestly, leaving an impression of considering the students' well-being. After we graduated, unfortunately, he passed away at a young age.

Shortly after entering my first year of high school, I remember having an individual meeting with Mr. Kawai, and we had the following conversation:

"Since Hideaki seems to have good concentration, how about joining the archery club to further develop that ability?"

"It's difficult because it takes about an hour for a one-way trip due to the long-distance commute using Atsumi Railway and Meitetsu trains."

"I see. In that case, focus on your studies. How about aiming for Kyoto University? It seems somehow suitable for you."

"..."

I'm not sure why Mr. Kawai suggested aiming for Kyoto University at that time, but in the end, I was able to obtain a degree from Kyoto University.

Reflecting on that time, I now believe that good guidance starts with understanding the true emotions of the other person who is truly lost, and guiding them with words that are necessary and sufficient, rather than simply babbling on. This is something I shared with Mr. Kawai at that time, and it is something I have been thinking about lately.
