金木犀の香り：2024年10月15日（火）

　一年前の京都市では，10月12日頃から，此処彼処（ここかしこ）で金木犀（キンモクセイ）の香りが漂い始めたが，今年は昨日の10月14日に金木犀の香りが京都産業大学（京都市北区上賀茂本山）キャンパスで漂い始めた。

　大学キャンパスの神山ホールの前にはバスプールがあり，バスの停留所の近くから100段の階段がある。今ではエスカレーターが設置されており，登る際にはエスカレーターを利用して山の上まで上がる。このエスカレーターで上っていく途上に，金木犀の木が生えており，毎年10月中旬頃になると，エスカレーターで上までに到着するまでの短い間ではあるが，甘く芳醇な金木犀の香りを堪能することができる。

　左手には黄金に輝いて見える銀杏並木があり，さらに天地館と万有館の校舎へと行くもう一つのエスカレーターに乗り換えて行くと，左右には深紅に映える紅葉の木が並んで生えている。このエスカレーターが建設される前には，秋の神山祭（11月初め）の頃になると，真っ赤に映える紅葉の木々がもっとたくさん生えていて，京産大のシンボルでもあった。エスカレーターの建設に伴い，その多くの紅葉が切られてしまい，惜しいことをしたものだ。

　金木犀や銀木犀の花を乾燥させたのが「桂花茶」である。金木犀の花は橙色であるが，橙色が濃い花ほど香りが強く，午前中は金木犀の花の酵素の活動が活発になり，夕方には落ち着き，ほのかに漂う甘い香りに変わるということだ。

A year ago in Kyoto, the scent of osmanthus (kinmokusei) began to drift in the air here and there around October 12, but this year, the fragrance started wafting across the Kyoto Sangyo University campus (Kamigamo Motoyama, Kita Ward, Kyoto City) on October 14.

In front of Kohyama Hall on the university campus, there is a bus pool, and near the bus stop, there is a staircase with 100 steps. Nowadays, an escalator has been installed, and when climbing, you use the escalator to reach the top of the hill. Along the way on this escalator, there are osmanthus trees, and every year around mid-October, for the short time it takes to ascend the escalator, you can enjoy the sweet and rich fragrance of the osmanthus.

To the left, there is a row of ginkgo trees glowing golden, and after transferring to another escalator that leads to the school buildings Tenchikan and Ban’yuukan, you’ll find rows of maple trees, shining in deep crimson, lined up on both sides. Before this escalator was built, there were many more vibrant red maple trees around the time of the Kohyama Festival in early November, and they were a symbol of Kyoto Sangyo University. Unfortunately, with the construction of the escalator, many of those maple trees were cut down, which is truly a pity.

Dried osmanthus and silver osmanthus flowers are used to make ‘guì huā chá’ (osmanthus tea). The flowers of the osmanthus are orange, and the darker the orange, the stronger the fragrance. It is said that the enzymes in the osmanthus flowers become more active in the morning, while by evening the scent mellows into a faint, sweet aroma.
