自転車のライトについて：2024年5月27日（月）
夕方から夜間にかけて，自転車を走らせるときはライトの点灯が不可欠である。自転車は軽車両とみなされ，道路交通法第52条をはじめ，各地方自治体によって詳細に規則があり，夜間に自転車を走らせるとき，自転車には灯火義務がある。近年，LEDの技術進歩で自転車に装着するヘッドライトとテールライトも明るくなり，とりわけ自動車や自転車のヘッドライトがとみに眩しく感じるようになったのは私だけであろうか。対面方向から来る自動車や自転車がビームにライトを切り替えると，反対方向から進むこちらから見ると眩しくて前方が見えなくなってしまい，「ひやっ」と危険を感じるシーンがよくある。
明るさを示す指標は，ルーメン（lm，全光束），カンデラ（CD，光度），ルックス（LUX，照度）の3つがある。一般に，自転車用のヘッドライトを選ぶときは，ルーメンとカンデラの両方を見ることが重要だ。私が現在使用している自転車のヘッドライトは350ルーメンである。これだと夜間に街灯なしでも時速20㎞で走っても前方が明るく見えて安心だ。あと，テールライトは夜間の自転車の街乗りにはとても重要なアイテムである。自転車運転者が車にひかれて死ぬ確率が最も高いのが夜間の追突事故であるという。
最近，ときどき遭遇するのが，夜間に自転車で高速走行し，1,000ルーメン以上の明るさでハイビームで突進してくる自転車乗りである。もっと悪質なのは，ヘッドライトを点滅させて猛突進してくる輩もいる。これについては，自転車のヘッドライトのメーカー側に対して希望したいことであるが，自転車のヘッドライトの点滅機能を外すべきではなかろうか。夜間に，自転車を運転するときに，ライトの点滅機能が必要な場面とはどういうものなのか。点滅して走らせる自転車と対面するたびに「イライラ」感を募らせている。

When riding a bicycle from evening to nighttime, turning on the lights is essential. Bicycles are considered light vehicles, and there are detailed regulations, starting with Article 52 of the Road Traffic Act and various local ordinances, that mandate the use of lights on bicycles at night. In recent years, advancements in LED technology have made bicycle headlights and taillights brighter. Am I the only one who feels that the headlights of cars and bicycles have become particularly dazzling? When oncoming cars or bicycles switch to high beams, it becomes so blinding from the opposite direction that I often can't see ahead, making for many "heart-stopping" dangerous moments.
There are three indicators of brightness: lumens (lm, total luminous flux), candelas (cd, luminous intensity), and lux (lux, illuminance). Generally, when choosing a bicycle headlight, it's important to consider both lumens and candelas. The headlight on my current bicycle is 350 lumens. With this, I can see ahead clearly and feel safe even when riding at 20 km/h at night without streetlights. Additionally, taillights are a very important item for city riding at night. The highest probability of a cyclist being killed by a car is in rear-end collisions at night.
Recently, I've occasionally encountered cyclists who speed at night with headlights over 1,000 lumens on high beam, rushing towards me. Worse still, there are those who rush with their headlights flashing. I have a request for bicycle headlight manufacturers regarding this: should the flashing function of bicycle headlights be removed? What situations necessitate the use of the flashing function while riding a bicycle at night? Every time I face a bicycle with flashing lights, my irritation grows.
