フィカス・ウンべラータ：2024年6月19日（水）

熱帯アフリカ原産のクワ科の常緑高木（ゴムの木と同じイチジク属）である。2021年11月に，贔屓にしている埼玉県さいたま市のHitoHana（ひとはな，運営会社は株式会社Beer and Tech）という観葉植物のオンラインストアで，フィカス・ウンベラータ10号を購入し，研究室内に配置している。それから2年7ヵ月が経ち，このフィカス・ウンベラータはすくすくと成長した。いまや，私と一緒にいる時間が最も長い生き物といっても過言ではない。それは，逆に，私が研究室にいる時間が長い証であるともいえる。

　ウンベラータ（umbellata）はラテン語の日傘を意味しており，葉の形はハート型で日傘のようにも見える。このフィカス・ウンベラータの特徴は，毎年6月頃の決まった時期になると，新しい葉が，数日間ほどの本当に短い時間で新芽から大きなハート型の葉に成長することである。この年に一回の勢いを３度ほど研究室で体験をして，フィカス・ウンベラータに一種の畏敬を感じてきた。

　というのも，フィカス・ウンベラータの葉のこうした成長の仕方を見て，ふと人の成長を示唆しているように思うからである。「こんなに勉強しているのに，なぜ，自分は成長しないんだろうか」と誰しも思うときがあるだろう。しかし，ある日，突然，それまでに準備してきた事柄が見事に成果となって顕在化あるいは実現できることがある。努力が報われる，ということである。そのときは，突然，やってくる。まさに，フィカス・ウンベラータの葉の成長は，このことを具現化して見せてくれているようだ。途中で諦めてしまうと，そうした「フィカス・ウンベラータの葉の成長」を見ることができない，と言っているようだ。

　秋になると，老いたフィカス・ウンベラータの葉は，傘が高所から低い所にひらひらと落ちていくように静かに散っていく。まるで，人の一生を見るようである。

Ficus Umbellata：June 19th(Wednesday)

The Ficus Umbellata, a member of the Moraceae family, is a tall evergreen tree native to tropical Africa and belongs to the same fig genus as the rubber tree. In November 2021, I purchased a Ficus Umbellata, size 10, from an online store for ornamental plants called HitoHana, located in Saitama City, Saitama Prefecture, which is operated by Beer and Tech Inc. I placed it in my laboratory. It has been two years and seven months since then, and this Ficus Umbellata has grown robustly. It would not be an exaggeration to say that it is now the living being with which I spend the most time. This, conversely, is also a testament to the long hours I spend in my laboratory.

The term "umbellata" means "parasol" in Latin, and the shape of the leaves is heart-shaped, resembling a parasol. A distinctive feature of this Ficus Umbellata is that every year, around June, new leaves grow from the buds into large heart-shaped leaves in a very short period of just a few days. Having witnessed this annual phenomenon three times in the laboratory, I have developed a sense of reverence for the Ficus Umbellata.

This is because observing the growth pattern of the Ficus Umbellata leaves makes me think of human development. Everyone has moments when they wonder, "Why am I not growing despite all this studying?" However, there are times when, suddenly, the efforts you have been preparing for manifest or materialize brilliantly. This means that hard work pays off, and that moment arrives unexpectedly. The growth of the Ficus Umbellata leaves seems to embody this concept perfectly. It seems to be saying that if you give up halfway, you will not be able to witness the "growth of the Ficus Umbellata leaves."

In the fall, the old leaves of the Ficus Umbellata quietly fall like parasols fluttering down from high places to lower ones. It is as if watching the life of a human being.
