Coming of Age Day:January 7th(Sunday)
In Japan, until 1999 (Heisei 11), January 15th was designated as "Coming of Age Day" and celebrated as a national holiday based on the Holiday Act. However, from the year 2000 onwards, the Happy Monday system of the Holiday Act was applied, and the second Monday of January became "Coming of Age Day." This year, January 8th is observed as "Coming of Age Day."
On the other hand, due to the first amendment in approximately 140 years to the Civil Code regarding the age of adulthood, the legal age of adulthood was lowered from 20 to 18 starting from April 1, 2022 (Reiwa 4).
Currently, it seems that many local governments are targeting individuals who are 20 years old in their celebratory events for "Coming of Age Day," despite the recent reduction in the legal age of adulthood.
