スミレはただスミレのように咲けばよい：2023年10月2日（月）

本学の京都産業大学で晩年に教鞭を執られ，天才数学者と言われた岡潔（おか　きよし）先生が，数学を研究して人類にどのような利益があるのかと問われて，答えた言葉である。

　「スミレはただスミレのように咲けばよいのであって，そのことが春の野にどのような影響があろうとなかろうと，スミレのあずかり知れないことだと答えてきた。私について言えば，ただ数学を学ぶ喜びを食べて生きているだけである。」

　岡潔先生は，多変数複素関数論の分野において，数学界における三大問題（レビの問題，クザンの問題，近似の問題）をすべて独力で解き，世界の数学者を驚かせた。1951年に日本学士院賞，1960年に文化勲章を受章した。その天才数学者の岡潔先生が亡くなる前に最後に残した言葉は以下のようなものだったと伝えられている。

　「まだ，したいことはいっぱいあるから死にたくない。しかし，しょせん駄目だろうなあ。あしたの朝には命はないなあ。計算ちごた。」

These were the words of Professor Kiyoshi Oka, a brilliant mathematician who taught at Kyoto Sangyo University in his later years, when he was asked about the benefits of researching mathematics for humanity.

"Violets should simply bloom like violets, and whether it has any impact on the spring field or not, that is something violets can't comprehend. As for myself, I am simply living by savoring the joy of learning mathematics."

Professor Oka, in the field of several complex variables, independently solved the three major problems in the mathematical world (the Levi problem, the Cousin problems, and the approximation problem), astonishing mathematicians worldwide. He received the Japan Academy Prize in 1951 and the Order of Culture in 1960. It is reported that these were the last words left by the genius mathematician Kiyoshi Oka before his passing:

"There are still many things I want to do, so I don't want to die. However, it will probably be in vain. Tomorrow morning, there will be no life left. I made a calculation mistake."
