雲外蒼天：2023年11月14日（火）

雲外蒼天（うんがいそうてん，There is always light behind the clouds.）とは，「人は幾多の困難や試練を克服して乗り越えた際に，その人がその先に見る景色は，それまでとは変わり，とても素晴らしいものとなる」との意味である。

　昨日，棋士の藤井聡太八冠が内閣総理大臣顕彰を受け取り，そのお返しとして雲外蒼天の文字を自筆で書いた将棋盤を寄贈したという。このことで，「雲外蒼天」の言葉が一躍脚光を浴びることになった。

　コロナ禍，戦争や紛争，気候変動に伴う自然災害，世界的なインフレ等で人類は困難と試練の中にあることから，この言葉を自分の境遇と重ね合わせて実感して受け止めている人も多いだろう。『若草物語』（1868年）の著者である米国女流作家のルイーザ・メイ・オルコット女史も大切にしていた言葉と言われている。

　2020年6月にTBS系全国ネット番組『情熱大陸』で放映された登山家・山岳カメラマンの平出和也氏と中島健郎氏によるラカポシ（パキスタン北部カラコルム山脈）の登頂記録の映像をみると，文字通り，雲外蒼天を表わす一つのイメージを掴むことができる。酸素ボンベを一切使わずに，標高7,788メートルの山を登りつめた瞬間，それまでの疲れをまったく忘れてしまい，360℃に拡がる景色を見おろす頂点に立った時の景色は，それを実現した人にしか見えないのだろうと思う。

The phrase "雲外蒼天" (Un'gai Souten, "There is always light behind the clouds") conveys the meaning that through overcoming numerous difficulties and trials, when one surpasses them, the scenery that lies beyond changes from what it was before, becoming truly magnificent.

Yesterday, the professional shogi player, Sota Fujii, who holds eight titles, received the Prime Minister's Award and, in return, donated a shogi board with the characters "雲外蒼天" handwritten as a gift. This event brought the term "雲外蒼天" into the spotlight.

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, wars, conflicts, climate change, global inflation, and other challenges, humanity finds itself facing difficulties and trials. Many people may relate to and embrace the meaning of this phrase as they personally experience and endure their own circumstances. It is said that Louisa May Alcott, the American author of "Little Women" (1868), also cherished this phrase.

Watching the footage of the ascent of Rakaposhi (Karakoram Range, northern Pakistan) by the mountaineer and mountain photographer Kazuya Hiraide and Kenro Nakajima, which was broadcast on the nationwide TBS program "Passion Continent" in June 2020, one can literally grasp an image representing "雲外蒼天." Ascending a 7,788-meter mountain without using any oxygen cylinders, the moment they reached the summit, all fatigue was completely forgotten. The view from the peak, overlooking a 360-degree expanse, is something only the person who achieved it can truly comprehend.
