Nurturing Minds: Addressing the Mental Health of Children with Foreign Roots

Hello, we are YUI!
We have introduced Japan's education system in our previous note, feel free to check them!
This time we would like to put the focus back on the children themselves. Let's talk about the issues of mental health that are of particular concern to us all.

Introduction

In the multicultural landscape of Higashihiroshima, a city known for its diverse population, lies a significant yet often overlooked community: the children with foreign roots "外国がいこくにつながりがあるども".

Recent data reveals that out of the 11,286 elementary school children in Higashihiroshima, 272 hold foreign nationalities until 1 May 2022. This statistic is not just a number; it represents a growing segment of society that faces unique challenges, particularly in the realm of mental health.

Understanding the Challenges

Children connected to foreign countries, defined as those with at least one parent of foreign origin, face a distinctive set of challenges. Language barriers, cultural differences, and the process of adaptation can take a toll on their mental wellbeing. For these children, school life and healthcare, essential aspects of childhood, often become a labyrinth of confusion and stress due to their limited Japanese language proficiency and unfamiliarity with local customs.

The Role of "YUI" and University Students

In response to these challenges, groups like us "YUI", a volunteer organization by Hiroshima University students, are stepping up. We focuses on supporting these children, offering activities and Japanese language assistance to ease their integration into society. But the question remains what more can be done, especially from a mental health perspective?

Parental Perspective and Support

Parents play a crucial role in understanding and nurturing children's mental health. It is essential for parents to recognize the signs of stress, anxiety, or cultural dissonance children might be experiencing. Effective communication, a supportive home environment, and active engagement in their school life are pivotal. In addition, the city government also has the related support, feel free to check the following article! (The other languages are also available on the Higashi-hiroshima city homepage)

The Call for Comprehensive Support

As university students and community members, our role transcends language assistance. We advocate for and contribute to a nurturing environment where these children feel accepted, understood, and valued. This involves not only language support but also cultural exchange activities, creating safe spaces, and fostering a community where diversity is celebrated.

The journey towards a multicultural coexistence in Higashihiroshima is ongoing. As we acknowledge the unique needs of children with foreign roots, we must also recognize our collective responsibility in supporting their mental health and overall wellbeing. Through understanding, empathy, and action, we can contribute to a society where every child, regardless of their background, can thrive.

This article serves as a starting point to raise awareness and initiate discussions on the mental health needs of children with foreign roots in Higashihiroshima. It can be further enriched with real-life examples, expert opinions, and more in-depth research on the subject.
