Interview:Defeat The Giant（Taiwan）

Brave Outは今年の8月にNumbernineと一緒に、台湾でライブを行った。台北と台中で2公演行ったのだが、いずれのショウもブッキングしてくれたのがDefeat The Giantである。彼らは東京のKlonnsの台中でのショウや、Whispersのツアーもブッキングしており、間違いなく台湾のシーンの中心・・・どころかそういった国際的な動きを台湾で実践しているのは、彼らが間違いなくパイオニアではないだろうか。

8月に台湾に行ったとき、普通ツアーは別れが名残惜しいものではあるが、彼らとは2か月後である10月に会えるのが決まっていたので、次なる楽しみしかなかった。

1.Defeat The Giant を始めたのはいつですか? 他にメンバーがいるバンドがあれば教えてください。

Defeat The Giantは2014年にスタートしましたが、実は2011年に同じメンバーで別名でバンド活動をしており、現在は正式メンバー全員がDefeat The Giantとして活動しています。サポートギタリストの小周は、VOOID や SPIT などの素晴らしいバンド、また伝説の透明雜誌でも演奏しています。

2.あなたに影響を与えたバンドを教えてください。

これは大きな疑問です。私たちは多くのバンドから影響を受けています。Turning Point, Verbal Assault, Youth of Today, Supertouch ,Have Heart, Fury, Abuse of Power、そしてThe SmithsやThe Stone Roses から Stone Temple Pilotsまで、多くの多くのアーティストに渡ります。全部あげきれません。私たちの音楽からそれが感じられるかどうかはわかりませんが。

3.先日はBrave Outを台湾にご招待いただきありがとうございます。DIRTIは誰と一緒に運営していますか?今後の予定があれば教えてください。

Brave Out を台湾に届けることができて光栄でした。来てくれた方々はとても楽しんでくれました。台湾でプレーしてくれて本当に感謝しています。近いうちにまた開催できるといいですね!
DIRTI は現在、主にハードコアショーのブッキングを行っています。そして、バンドメンバーにたくさん助けてもらってます。ボブは音響的なことを手伝ってくれて、バリーもビデオの編集を手伝ってくれます。また、フライヤーのデザインやライブ写真などを手伝ってくれる友達もいて、たくさんの友達と一緒にDIRTIを運営しています。私から見ると、DIRTI は小さなコミュニティのようなものです。友人の中にはこの名前を使ってポッドキャストをしている人もいます。この名前でZINEを作っている友達もいます。
みたいな……でも、今はショーをすることがほとんどです。もっと海外のバンドと共演できたらいいですね。最も重要なことは、新しい地元のハードコアバンドがもっと増えることを願っています。

4.台湾のハードコアシーンについてはどうですか? 台湾のシーンはパンクバンドと共演していたり、ZINEやフライヤーカルチャーが密接にあってかっこいいと思っていました。

台湾のシーンは小さいですがクールです。今はバンドがあまりいないんです。でもどのバンドも素晴らしいですよ。それが、私たちが普段パンクバンドと一緒に演奏している理由です。私たちはほぼ同じショウにいます。いつもお互いをサポートするだけでなく、サゴが言うように、フライヤーやZINEの文化など、相互に影響し合っている雰囲気を常に楽しんでいます。そういう相互影響がおそらく台湾のシーンをユニークなものにしているのでしょう。でも、もう一度いいますが、私はもっと多くのバンドが出てくることを願っています!!

1.When did you start Defeat The Giant?

Please let me know if there are any other bands with members.
We started Defeat The Giant at 2014. But we actually played a band at 2011 in a different name with same members.
All the official members are now just playing Defeat The Giant. Supportive guitarist 小周 is playing other amazing bands, like VOOID and SPIT, also the legendary 透明雜誌.

2.Please let me know any bands that have influenced you.

This is a big question. We are influenced by many bands. From Turning Point, Verbal Assault, Youth of Today, Supertouch to Have Heart and Fury, Abuse of Power; from The Smiths, The Stone Roses to Stone Temple Pilots and many many many. I can’t really mention all of them at the moment. Not sure if you can hear it from our music though.

3. Thank you for inviting Brave Out to Taiwan the other day.Who do you run DIRTI with?Please let us know if you have any future plans.

It was my pleasure to bring Brave Out to Taiwan, people were really enjoying it. Really appreciated for playing Taiwan. Hopefully we can have it again soon!
DIRTI now is mostly about booking hardcore shows. And my band members help me a lot with it. Like Bob helps me with the technical stuffs, Barry helps me with the video contents. Also, there are friends helping me with the flyers design as well as the live photo.
I run DIRTI with many friends. DIRTI is just like a small community from my perspective. Some friends use this name to do podcasts. Some friends make zine under this name. Something like that... But I mostly do shows for now. Hopefully we can do more shows with overseas bands. Most importantly, I hope there’re more and more new local hardcore bands.

4.How about Taiwan’s hardcore scene?I thought Taiwan’s scene was cool, as they performed together with punk bands, and the zine and flyer culture was cool.

Taiwan’s scene is small but cool. We don’t have many bands now. But all of the bands are amazing. And that’s why we usually play with punk bands. We’re almost in the same scene. I always enjoy the vibe that we not only always support each other, but also influence each other in a good way, just like you said, the flyer and zine culture. That probably make Taiwan’s scene unique.
But yes, I still wish that there are more bands here!!

I want to do many things...
