Excellent Tendon 〜自社の絶品天丼〜

Spotted a cute name for a tendon (tempura rice bowl).

We usually don’t see “excellent” used as an adjective to name a dish on a menu—but that tendon sure looks “excellent” (and it probably really is!), so we approve of this name! 😁

Mini Japanese lesson:
上 (“jyo”) means “best,” “superior,” or “excellent.” And FYI, 特上 (“tokujo”) goes a level higher and means “finest” or “top-grade.”

As a sidenote — the other meaning of “tendon” (as in the biological/physiological sense) comes to mind every time the editors see this word!

Excellent は「極めて良い」「優秀な」「一流の」「非常に優れた」の意味で、食べ物についても「絶品」といったニュアンスで表現するときに使われます。

ただ、メニュー名としては少々違和感があります。

どちらかというと、お客さんが「この天丼、とっても美味しい！絶品！」と言うときに使うものだからです！

なので、
このケースでは、以下のような文面で使うと良いかもしれません！

“How’s the tendon?” “Excellent!”

“This tendon uses excellent-quality ingredients.”

ちなみに、自社製品について excellent という形容詞はあまり使いません。

ちなみに… tendon は「腱」の意味でもあるので、英語表記を目にするとそちらの意味の tendon が思い浮かびます (笑)
