Imagination Unleashed! Let's enjoy dancing in the world of "HOKUSAI MANGA”, BUTOH Workshop Every Wednesday from September 6 #北斎漫画舞踏 創作過程 3'

AGAXART, represented by Emiko Agatsuma (Butoh dancer and director), will hold the HOKUSAI MANGA BUTOH "Dancing SENTO" project. The first workshop of the project will be held every Wednesday, starting on September 6, 2023, for a total of four workshops.

The workshop will introduce the basic training of a unique Butoh dance in which you imagine your body as a bag of water and try to move it, and develop it into a dance based on the motif of "Hokusai Manga". Participants are recommended to attend all four sessions in a row, but may attend only one. Those who wish to participate may join the Butoh performance "Dancing SENTO" in November.

Butoh and “Hokusai Manga”, a fusion of the most representative Japanese arts!

What is Butoh?

Butoh is a contemporary dance form that originated in Japan in the 1960s, with Tatsumi Hijikata and Kazuo Ohno as its famous founders. Butoh questions established values, reexamines one's own body and inner self, the Japanese custom, and dance, and reconstructs them from a unique perspective. This unique physical expression has a different way of thinking from Western dance and has attracted interest from around the world.

What is "HOKUSAI MANGA"?

The "HOKUSAI MANGA" is an illustrated manuscript by the ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai. Katsushika Hokusai's best-known work is "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji," and his name is widely known throughout the world. The "HOKUSAI MANGA" is described by Katsushika Hokusai himself as "a rambling depiction of things as they occur to him". Unlike modern manga like comics, this "HOKUSAI MANGA" was not sequential, but was drawn in a disorganized manner. The first edition of this work was published in 1812, when Katsushika Hokusai was 52 years old and continued to be published until 1878.

What is "HOKUSAI MANGA BUTOH Workshop"?

The "HOKUSAI MANGA BUTOH Workshop" is a workshop welcoming beginners, even those who just want to try a little physical exercise. The workshop will introduce simple basic Butoh training and gradually develop into dances based on the "Hokusai Manga" motif. Even those who think they are not good at dancing can participate at their own pace. We recommend that you participate in 4 sessions in a row, but only one session is also possible. If you are looking to get some exercise or just want to try Butoh, feel free to join us.

Feedback from participants

l  I had seen butoh before, but I thought it was not for me... but I like Hokusai's paintings and thought it would be fun to be a part of it!

l  I participated this time because I wanted to know how to think and move in Butoh. I was very impressed and learned a lot from watching Emiko and Tomoshi up close and personal, and how they create emotions!l

It was my first time to participate, but the images were clearly conveyed to me and I was able to do it without any confusion and without becoming nothing. The time flew by and I am glad I was able to attend.
