シロナンバ かつて梅酒や梅干で活躍した大阪発祥の白梅
白難波 （シロナンバ）
バラ目、バラ科、アンズ属に分類されるウメ。
このウメは、花梅ではなく実梅として広く利用を
されてきたものであり、大阪を原産とし、梅干や
梅酒に使われてきた実梅のブランドとなった品種
がこの『白難波』である。元々が実が大きく育つ
事や風味や香り、味が良かったものである。
これをベースとし、自然交配や選抜の歴史を経て
生まれたのが、『古城梅』（コジョウウメ）である。
更に実がふっくらと大型に育ち、果肉も厚め仕上
となる事から、梅干にした際の食感の良さなどが
認められたのである。
だが、更にそれを上回って登場したウメこそが
あの『南高梅』（ナンコウウメ））である。和歌山の
気候の中で育つこのウメは、それまでの『白難波』
『古城梅』を抑えた能力により、ブランド化されて
全国レベルで梅酒や梅干の代表格となる。

『白難波』 ▶︎ 『古城梅』 ▶︎ 『南高梅』
へと変遷していったものとなっている。
とは云いつつも、このシロナンバは東北を中心に
今も、梅干や梅酒用に育てられている。
Shiro-Nanba
Shiro-Nanba is a variety of Prunus mume classified under the order Rosales, family Rosaceae, and genus Prunus.
Unlike ornamental plum trees, this variety has been widely used as a fruit-bearing plum (Jitsubai). Originating from Osaka, Shiro-Nanba became a well-known variety specifically cultivated for making umeboshi (pickled plums) and umeshu (plum wine). It was valued for its large fruit size, excellent aroma, rich flavor, and overall superior quality.
Through a process of natural hybridization and selective breeding, Kojo-Ume (Kojo Plum) was later developed from Shiro-Nanba. This new variety featured even larger and plumper fruits with thicker flesh, making it highly regarded for its improved texture when processed into umeboshi.
However, the plum that ultimately surpassed them both was Nanko-Ume. Cultivated in the climate of Wakayama, Nanko-Ume outperformed both Shiro-Nanba and Kojo-Ume in quality and was eventually branded as the premier variety for umeshu and umeboshi on a nationwide scale.

Despite this transition, Shiro-Nanba is still cultivated, particularly in the Tohoku region, where it continues to be used for making umeboshi and umeshu.
